2000 LS400 I Went Monotone
Just got my car back from the Body Shop
I had all the grey painted pearl white to make the car montone
They took everything off, sides, front and rear bumpers, replaced the chrome strip
No overspray since everything was taken off and painted in the paint book.
My understanding is that Pearl white is very hard to match.(Tri stage)
No body shop would guarantee the match.
I would say its about 90% close.. I wish it was 100% but what can you do.
One body shop did not even want to do the job, he stated that Pearl is so hard to match?
Here are the Before
I also, cleared out the corner lights and put chrome amber bulbs in them.
I hope you like.

Looks good.
When I was having the bumper replaced, my intent was to also shave the rear trunk emblems and see what painting the rockers might be $$-wise. Of the body shops I interviewed, none would guarantee the three stage paint to match. The recommended course was to paint the roof and rear quarters. BUT then it may show differences on the door panels...then I only have the doors, front quarters and hood. Basically, it would be a whole spray job for the continuity.
My bumper is acceptably close, it's no match though. Oh well....

Concerning the price .. . Keep in mind location of where you are in the country will effect the price.
1st estimate $2500 RIP OFF
2nd estimate $1400 CASH out the door.. removed all grey including bumper new chrome strip on the bumpers
If your car is black or a solid color other then pearl white you may get a better price. I would shop around.. Good Luck

Yes, matching a three stage paint is really hard to do...it's about as troublesome as matching metallics. What they probably ended up doing is mixing it as close as they can using formulas, spraying it out on test cards, then matching it to your car. This is really tricky.
One way to get out of it is to "fade" the pearl layer onto other parts of the body, then clear everything again. Of course, that costs lots mad amounts of money in materials, so once again, you got a good deal.
Per chance, did you ask him what the warranty on the paint was? Also, what brand paint he used? Some use PPG or Dupont, other brands for the base coat, but as for the clear coat, they can use cheaper brands if need be. Painting a car is so complicated when mixing everything together...

I did not ask what brand they used? I would assume a quality paint.
However he did give me a lifetime warranty in writing-- against peeling cracking etc.
I went to a reputable place they are recommended by State Farm Ins and they are on the BBB.
