Default Weird electrical issue.

I was cruising on the HWY and traffic began to pile up...
As soon as I tapped my break, the car acted like it re-started.

For a brief moment, the dash went dim, the radar detector restarted, the CD paused for a second and began playing again and the rear-view went dark to light (as if I just started the car)
So I kept playing with the peddles a bit...to try and figure this out...

After building up some speed for a while and I apply my break it does a minor version of what I describe.
After cruising for a long time - couple minutes - it does like a total restart.
But the car doesn't cut off. RPMs aren't really affected at all like a bad battery would do.

So I continued on home and put it in park.
I tapped the brake and there was a thunk from under the shift lever.
weird. Tapped the brake again - same thunk. no change.
That doesn't happen at all while in drive/reverse and never happend before 7pm today - ever.

So I need HELP.

I searched the problem matrix in the CD manual and came up empty.
I'm going to put the car on ramps in a minute and have a look.
don't know if that will help, though.

My hypothesis:
It has got to be a short or loose ground.

any other ideas or has anyone else experienced this?

The thunk under the shifter is the gear lock being released from applying the brake.
Sounds like you have an alternator on the way out the door.

...is the gear lock being released
Yup, I tore it down just now, saw exactly what you mentioned.
It never sounded this loud to me, or maybe me not driving it for a while...
eeeh - I dunno

I cleaned all the gunk and goo off the console parts and shined up the wood.
Put that back together and I'm thinking possibly you are right.

alternator?

Doesn't quite feel like that yet.
We'll see.

thanks

No worries, the problem you are experiencing is a voltage drop . It may have a power steering leak causing the failure as well.
You never noticed the sound before because you were never looking for something as well the car might be off.

Since you guys at CL are SOOO helpful... and I am busy as snot right now,

Can someone PM me a good brand or place to get my Alternator from for a good price?
I'll be hunting for the pressure hose and pump soon.
thanks for years of help CL.

Lets hope the LS doesn't go kapoot on me this weekend. I got to travel out of state.

Sounds like a grounding issue. Check the battery connections at the battery and ground on the frame for corrosion.
