I recently bought a 96 LS400 this week, and I have a microphone sitting on top of the rear view mirror. It is attached to a wire that seems to be coming out of the roof or something. The wiring is under the covering so it's not exposed, but the microphone hangs from it and sits right in the mirror. Does anyone know what this is?

microphone for the in-car cell phone that was available as a Dealer option at the time the car was purchased. if i remember correctly, almost all LS's were pre-wired from the factory for it.

a pic would help tho, since its possible it is an aftermarket mike for voice controlled nav or somethiing that the previous owner took out.

The microphone for the dealer installed Lexus phone was integrated into the steering wheel phone command module -- it would have been mounted on the left side of the steering wheel -- you can see the pop-out plastic blank where it would have been mounted. The microphone that you see attached to your mirror was probably for an aftermarket phone kit.

The microphones for the Nokia phone kits in our LS400 and Camry are both mounted near the inside rear view mirrors.
