Default Timing Belt

How many miles before you change your timing belt? My car has 92k and still running strong should I change it or wait?

To each their own, but I would not even consider it until 120,000 + miles unless I had been very hard on the car or have reason to believe that a prior owner was. That would now be my policy on even a Generation II interference engine!!

In the real world these things just do not break!! Been here a lot of years & the only one that I can even recall reading about happened when a water pump failed.

I did mine at 172,000 when a fan bracket bearing failed.

The belts on these cars have good longevity. It's the idlers and water pump that become the concern as time passes. I had mine done at 100K and the parts looked to be in good shape. In my instance, it might have gone another 20K without problem.

Had mine done at 129K...the dealer said NOTHING looked worn. I'm sure you will be good for a while. (besides, it will give you time to save up!)

Well the dealer will want you to do the 90k service or 97k service which will come out to $1500 due to timing belt replacement.

I have a 94, and I didn't change mine until 230k miles. I wouldn't recommend going this far but just letting you know that these things are built solid on our cars and last a long time before they give you trouble.

Matsui,

That is the longest duration I have heard about for a original TB, but I am not in the least bit surprised. What finally made you change it?

Default 130k here

I just got spark plugs, TB, and water pump, fuel filter, ps flush done by a reputable CHEAP local mechanic who has been working on our cars for years for $800. Timing belt looked on the verge of destruction, tons of cracks all over it. The water pump was cracked and the spark plugs were toast. Car runs great now with the plugs.

damon - at that time the car was shuddering when idle and I wasn't sure what was causing it. I looked around in the forum for some advice which was to replace spartk plugs, wires, clean TB etc....so I thought while I'm getting these done then might as well get the TB and water pump replace too since I'm planning to keep this car for a long long time. Believe it or not I also replaced the original drive belt at that time too. Needless to say the belts were in pritty bad shape. I'm of the thought that if it aint broken dont fix it. I know I took a gamble in letting these things go on for so long but I'm really impressed with lexus quality.

I don't drive my car hard at all and replace alll the fluids at regular intervals so maybe that's why my car just keeps going and going without any issues.

I would have carried my TB kit in my trunk until 230,000 if mine would have gone that long. There really is no risk on a pre-94. When my fan bracket bearing failed & most of the parts were coming off the front of the 1uz-fe for that repair anyway I went ahead & did the whole shabang.

You did get a great deal. I had the same work done in Houston, TX and it cost around $1,100. Since they had to remove many items to get to the timing belt I had them install all new parts. Now I am good to nearly 200k (now at 160k).
