Default What's The Difference In These Power Steering Pumps?

Hi guys, I have the 1990 LS400 (UCF10) in which I am having to replace the P/S pump. My question is this.... there are 3 pumps to choose from, and I was told I could use either, however all 3 have different designs. A guy told me that I should try a different design than the OEM because it has higher or better specifications. Is that true? And would either of these fit the car regardless of the initial difference in design? The website is listed below. Please click on it to see what I am talking about and respond as soon as possible. I am dumb when it comes to things like this. LOL.

As much as possible try to stay away from REMANUFACTURED parts. I do understand that most of us do have a budget, but with a labor intensive job like that, I would not try to skimp on the parts just to find out that the part you just installed just failed again. Try and save. GL on the repair.

Thanks. I definitely agree, but this is the problem I am facing.... The pump on my car is the same as the first one in the link i supplied in this thread. But I was told that the second one is probably the better design to use this time. Is that true? Has anyone else used a different design than the original pump? Is this possible? I just want to know if I could opt for either design?

Bet the pictures are not telling the true story here.
All these pumps will be the same as the 1st picture which I recognize as a Lexus pump.

The 1990 is so old now, even the Lexus dealership will sell you reman parts only such as PS pump and water pump. There is nothing wrong with them.

my understanding is thqt the original lexus design had plastice elements which are what leaked.

the toyota pump was made of metal. mine was replaced witht he toyota unit and has not leaked in 120k miles.

Oh, cool.. thanks for clearing that up for me. So, obviously, the guy who told me to get another style of pump didn't know what the heck he was talking about. lol. I didn't think you could put a whole different type of pump on a car. Thanks a lot. It is much clearer now.

Wonder if he was trying to steer you to a pump without a steering relay?

An SC400 uses the same pump as an LS but does not use the troublesome PS relay.

Physically, there is no room to experiment w other PS pums as has been noted, bolt patterns & the amount of room involved see to that.

Not sure what his intentions were, Damon, but I am glad I didn't follow through with what he requested. However, I do believe he meant well. Maybe he truely thought the pumps were the same? LOL. Maybe I will ask him since I know what shop he works for. For different pumps to work on a single engine just sounded downright ridiculous. I didn't think it was possible, and I am glad I posed the question here on this forum before going out and embarassing myself with such a stupid question. LOL. But if you don't know, ask! Right?

Both my 92 and my 95 had slow leaking pumps. Both were easily fixed by a complete flush of the system, and filling up with Valvoline Maxlife with stop leak Dexron III fluid + about 2 table spoons of Bardhall stop smoke and stop leak to increase the oil viscosity and to condition the seals. I have put 50k miles on my 92 since and 20k miles on my 95 after having done that and I have no problems with leaks. It worked for me, but may not for you. Do this at your own risk.

Mine is leaking from the bolt or nut at the bottom of the pump just above the alternator. right now, the pump is empty because i don't want a dead alternator. would that be the high pressure hose leaving that nut? actually, i have power steering, it's just leaking from that area.
