1992 LS400 Aftermarket Radio
I am trying to purchase/install an aftermarket head unit for my 92 ls400 and cannot find any concrete information. The audio shops tell me that I absolutely must bypass the factory amp, but I cannot find any articles online that even mention a facotry amp in the 92's. I did find a website with an amplifier bypass harness, but the 92 ls400 is not listed as a compatible vehicle. Link here:
http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/TO...1334.html#tabs
I also found an install guide that said to use the regular 87+ toyota harness and did not mention an amp. Before I start making purchases, I would just like to get some concrete information, hopefully from someone who has done this before. I will be getting a headunit that plays mp3 cd's and interfaces with my ipod, so the cd changer does not have to function(although it would be nice for completion), and I will be installing an aftermarket sub, so the factory sub does not have to function(it's blown anyways) Any help would be great.

ok after more research, it looks like some units have the ampifier built into the headunit, but I am unable to determine if the 92 is built into the headunit or not. If it is built into the head unit, then I should have no problems connecting a factory unit using a standard 87+ wiring harness correct? Built in amp = no amp to bypass......right? Also, I noticed on the 87+ harness there are 2 connectors, however, on this article:
http://www.cureline.net/lex/audio/ho...g_daigrams.htm
it shows 3 connectors, so what am I not understanding? oh an uncle_el, thanks for the quick response, but those 2 links contradict each other. One says buy this and that and its plug and play, and the other says there is no plug and play solution available, you must wire everything yourself from a diagram. It was this sort of inconsistancy I found in my searches that prompted me to make a new thread.

There is no problem with remote amps in these cars that I know of. I just had my 93 Pioneer unit changed out for a Nakamichi, and it is a straight plug-in. The amps are in the dash unit
itself. Watch out for sound shop guys who don't know these cars. They have all sorfs of in-
correct information. All the speakers are exactly the same for both units and don't have to
be changed out or anything. You might consider finding a good, refurbished Nakamichi unit
and listening to it to see if it pleases you. The one I have now is all that I wanted and I got it
for $200. By the way, I was not interested in installing the CD player in the trunk, so I didn't even take it. If I begin to use CDs, I have some kind of single CD put where I can reach it.
