Default IAT sensor tweaking

Will messing with the IAT sensor harm my engine? The IAT sensor is what controls the air to fuel mixture. If you replace the IAT with a sensor the claims the air is cooler than what it is, how bad would that effect my engine? Is a richer fuel mixture better or worse?

Thanks

I would not do that, why make the car think the air is cooler then it really is? I know the reasoning behind it, but I'm sure sideffects exist.

I was just hearing about it the other day from one of my friends, and thought i might ask to see if anyone knew what harm it could do.
