Middle thing on the back Speakers?

I'm wondering what that thing on the back of the LS is. It looks like a subwoofer or something. Anyone know......

Don't know what year yours is. Mine is a '92 LS and the sub was shot when I got the car. Do a search on here and you can get some ideas for fixes from very simple to difficult. I took the very simple route..I put a Kenwood 8" in with a new amp and it really made a big difference. Total cost was c. $40 for the sub and $50 for the amp.
