Thumbs down 89$ Oil Change!!!!!

Ok, so I've moved to Toronto Canada, from FLA for the year and I just got quite a shocker!

I called Ken Shaw Lexus to get an oil/filter change (conventional oil). They quoted me 89$ CAD...That's around 75 USD, plus taxes. WTF, am I getting a blow job with that, Ken Shaw Motors??

Is it common practice in Toronto, to rip off Lexus owners, or is it just this particular Lexus dealership? Hell, Palm Beach Lexus used to change my oil/filter, top off my fluids and clean the damn thing for 24.99!

They are crazy. Ever since I found out my dealer uses $2 dollar non-brand filters after i've specified 10x to use Toyota filters, and was assured that’s what put in, I’ve decided it was cheaper to buy my own Mobil 1 filter, and oil. Takes less then 10mins to dissemble parts, and filter, and draining takes about as much as you'd like.

On the other hand, 24.99 is pretty cheap for a Lexus dealer oil change. You probably got sticker shock from such a big leap. Still, $75US is pretty high.

Damn, they did all that at a Lexus dealer for $24.99? That is a steal man.

i agree, just change it yourself. the oem filter is only like 6 bucks and get some synthetic oil, and change it yourself. WAY cheaper than 75 bucks dude.

Make sure to use a Wix or Wix made NAPA branded oil filter, with a good synthetic oil.

Compared to most mass cars, where an oil change is $25, this is excessive. In the grand scheme, if the dealer is good, these bread & butter services keep them in good form and that hopefully means good service for you. (That thinking bites but it's rationalizing. )

How is the lounge at this place? Do they have decent food and drinks while you are waiting? If I have to go to Cerritos Lexus, I schedule around when I know the food comes in. Then I eat some of the difference back.

Well,

Somebody has to pay for national healthcare up there in the north 40.

Keep the shiny side up and your cars off dealer racks.

You also have 15% sales tax there, is that part of the $89CDN? Nevertheless, that is excessive. Did you ask them why so expensive? Maybe they consider it some kind of special 'inspection service' or something?

The 89$ CAD, didnt include the 15% tax!! I did however call four other Lexus dealers and they all had similar prices, give or take 10 dollars. I asked if there was any special services or if the oil had some magic additive making is cost so much, and they all danced around the question. Screw em!

I actually used to change my oil when I had a driveway, but now I'm crammed into an apartment, with a tiny parking space and no tools with me....so I think I'm going to be forced to go to a Jiffy Lube

I dont want to start another thread on synthetic vs. conventional, but is the switch worthwhile with nearly 150K miles on my car?

I alternate between Ft. Lauderdale FL and Arlington VA and have seen the same disparity in oil change charges. Down in Florida, it's Toyota-like charges for an oil change and up North its maybe $65 or so (I've never paid it). I've used the local Toyota dealer for their Express-Lube oil changes, but they have now been trying to discourage Lexus'.

Big difference in 15K, 45K-mi, ... service too. Down in Florida, if you insist on only Lexus-recommended service, it's $99. Up North, it's maybe $200-$300. ($400+ if you let them do their own thing).

The USD $75 charge beats the heck out of the $120 quoted to me by the MB stealership for my MB S420 when I got it. And no turkey sandwich and soda!!! Albeit, the S420 takes a $12 oil filter, and almost 9 quarts of oil. Regardless, $75 is about right for a dealership. Also, I am from Toronto, and Toronto is one of the most expensive places in the World.
I lived in the dorm when I was in college and shamelessly did my own oil change in a tight parking lot. Do it man. And use the 15,000 mile synthetic oil by Mobil1.
