Default Help: Looking at buying another 98-00 LS and have a HID?

Hey gang,

I have been in the market for another 98-00 for my wife. We have found a very nice 98 example that meets all but one of our needed options....

1. White/sil with gray leather
2. Wood wheel and shifter
3. Low, low miles 59k
4. 1 owner
5. mint condition.

However, this car does not have HID.

My question, can the factory system be retrofitted? if I find a complete unit from salvage?

I think we will still buy the car because of the condition, color and miles and then maybe add PIAA bulbs to the lights and fogs. What do you think??

It can be fitted with HID's, however, you wont have the Auto Leveling feature.

You can find both sides, with bulbs and ballasts for about $500 bucs on eBay.

Guys,

Thanks a ton!

To clarify, I can install the bulb/ballasts to the factory non-hid plug ins? and into the factory non-hid housings?

Or, I need to buy the entire headlight assm with the bulbs/ballasts/housing and then plug into the factory plugins.

Thanks again

You can do both, but if you don’t get the HID specific housing, the lighting output will be scattered, and not very efficient (The HID housing has a different reflector). Your better off buying HID housings, bulbs and ballasts all together from eBay... much better lighting and cutoff line, and you won’t blind oncoming drivers. You would have to purchase a harness to plug in the HID housing to your NON-hid plugs. Havent done it myself, but the GS guys do it allllll the time.

I have the same problem as you with my LS. Everything but the HID. Does anyone know where I can get the wiring harness needed to install the HID lights. I already have the complete units with bulbs and ballasts. Just dont know where to get the harness. THanks for any help.

Update!

Just finished a 2300 mile trip in our new/used 98LS. It turns out the car does have HID. Hahah, even the Sewell Lexus salesman didnt know or check. The car is fantastic! I was worried about sun damage coming from Texas but the paint and interior is flawless....1owner, factory paint. Sewell is #1

Oh, and SEMA was packed this year. I stopped by Vegas on my way and took in 3 days of SEMA.

A LOT of wiring and a few ECU's and sensors are needed for Auto leveling. Not worth all the work at all.

Is it possible to install the headlights without the auto-leveling.

Thanks

I guess i will install them W/o auto leveling.. but.... after looking at the diagrams.. it shouldn't be that much more work.. all you need to do is get the connectors and the level computers.. but its ok... what i will do is see how the motor is controlled to see if i can do some sort of bixenon or something.

What i want to do is tap into that sensor, and electronically control the level from inside.

Is a special harness required or will the standard one work, with just changing the connectors.

Thanks again,

Craig
