Default 98 Cam belt failure at 73000 miles

Got an unpleasant surprise.....I started my 98 up and heard loud engine noise-sounded like loud lifters. I shut it off within 5 seconds. Checked oil, fine. No other problems seen. I tried to start it again and it cranked hard-like advanced timing. My diagnosis without going further: timing belt jumped a notch.

Can anyone give me some input on their experiences-what can I expect is damaged? I just don't wnat to tear into it, replace lots of parts and then find I need to replace valves or pistons.

This car ran great up to now and has been maintained. I am shocked about this early failure. (Note: was a Lexus-certified vehicle, and mileage appears authentic)

Are there any 98 cam belt tutorials anywhere??? I see one for the older models without the variable valve timing.

Lastly, any recommendations for a good shop between Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA?

Thanks in advance!!!

Tom

a cylinder leak down test can tell you if you have bent valves. thats a cheap option for now.

if you got it from lexus under a new warranty just give them a call or if you want to have a look at the timing belt take off one of the timing belt covers, i think its 3 bolts.

Default More on the 98 failure....

I bought this car from a friend. The 100k certified warranty only applies to the original purchaser. I had purchased a warranty from Warranty Gold, but thier administrator went bankrupt. I'm screwed....

i have a subscription from alldata for my car but i dont know how to post it up here in the forum for you to read. if someone could show me how to post it i would do that for you. did you check to see if your accessorie belt broke b/c you shouldnt be having timing belt issues at 73k unless its defective.

expect whats damaged. valves and pistons.

but dont think its that

i belive its an interference motor but i could be wrong. here is an easy way to check. the engine on tdc for piston number 1. take off cam cover and remove the cap and rotors. both sides

u might be able to see paintmarks on the timing belt should align with the timming marks on the cam its self. if u dont see the paint marks keep turning the engine till u see it every time on tdc piston 1. both marks on the cam should match and if they do it hasnt jumped time
