so with some slight modding (dremeled out the sockets) the #74 blue LED's that i purchased from www.superbrightleds.com fit...but...to my dismay, instead of lighting blue, the panel is still bright white... i am boggled

To change the color on the instrument cluster you need to replace the entire back face of the cluster (the thin panel that has the speeds and tach, etc). Unfortunately, I do not know of any aftermarket cluster panel faces. I recommend sticking to bulbs in the cluster, not LEDs. These small bulbs light up the warning lights and a few other things. The colors of these are also controlled by the rear panel of the cluster.

Also, the majority of the cluster is lit by cold cathode tubes. Your cluster is still white mainly because of the panel and the white cold cathodes. Basically, just leave the cluster stock until parts are available......or invent some parts!
