Default Bad bearings and other assorted problems

Hey guys,

I've been lurking around the forums but havent posted too much. I have a 91 ls400 with about 185000 miles on it. The other day the caliper siezed and it costed about 1120 buck to fix the caliper, a front brake job and have both calipers replaced. Now, the manager is telling me that the ball bearings on the front have given out and need to be replaced. He quoted about 500 per side to fix but also added that once they got into it, there may be more damage and could cost up to 1200 per side. My question is simply, does this sound correct or fishy. I know that the wheel bearings are out on one side because of the noise but what about the additional costs??? They gave me a wholesale value of 2,000 for the car. It doesn't make much sense to put in all this money if the entire system is worn out so I'm deciding whether it is worth it to fix. Love the car and hate to get rid of it, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars to discover new problems that will cost thousands more. BTW, I live in Chicago so suggestions about any private shops that work on LS400s would be appreciated.

Thanks fellas.

The costs seem a bit excessive.

Default Wheel bearing

I was a little surprised at the effort to change one (drivers side front) out. I think my total cost w parts & labor was in the $150.00 range. Lots of specialty tools required.

$1120 to replace both calipers????? You must be going to a (St)Dealer. The calipers can be found rebuilt from Napa for under $100 each and good rotors are $25 now also from Napa. The labor to swap a caliper and bleed should not be more than 3 hours if a sloth is doing it.

As for the bearings, call around for more quotes or find a good japanese repair shop. There is nothing special about this kind of repair that any experienced mechanic couldn't do with his eyes closed.

Ya,

I think I'm gonna take it to my Mitsubishi dealership and see what he can do. Hopefully it will be far cheaper there. When they are doing this I'm think about asknig him to replace the bushings as well. How many are there and where is a good place to purchase replacement ones from?
