Would you jump into this boat?
 

Here's the scenario: I already have three cars, a 2001 solara, a 1997 Camry and a 94 Es300. I am happy with them. Thusfar they have been good to me...but then again...i do the major services+tune ups at the dealership.. and that prolongs any vehicle life. The 94 Es was gifted to my sis a few years back (but i still hold the title on it).

My boss has a 1993 LS with close to 140K miles which he doesn't need anymore, its been sitting for close to 2-5 months. According to him, it ran fine and he bough a new car when the a/c died in his LS. Parts+labor were costing him close to 2K , and he decided to buy a new S600 at that time rather than mess with this one. As per him, the only prob's had was leaky ps fluid (i did the search and found out thats a common gen 1 LS problem - ps high pressure hose). He said he fixed that problem. I talked with him, and he said i could keep his 93 LS. Keep as in....keep it. I know my boss, as much as a rich he might be, he's not a person that would have taken in his car every 3K miles for service. My question is would you jump into this boat/scenario ...Would you take this LS? I have not driven it myself, but i've sat in with him when we went to meetings and such..and it drove smoothly. No noices, the suspension was smooth and the tranny shifted w/ no probs. I personally have always loved the gen 1 LS's. Accepting this car and then selling it is NOT an option..as its a gift to me from him. I'm thinking of letting my wife drive the LS (she add's close to 4K miles per year on our camry)...My only worry is I don't want it to become a car where i put in money and it becomes a pot where there is no end to repairs. Any car lives longer for the maint. it undergoes than for the milage under the hood. Let me know what you all think....Cus' right now my hearts' saying YES - got for it.

It's free, take it. Ask him if he changed the timing belt though.

take it and get the necessary repairs done and it will be a safe car and it will last a very long time :thumbup:

If this has been a dream car for you, by all means this is an opprtunity if it works in the grand scheme of things.

My take is that the safety standars are current on the Camry and Solara, I also imagine that these cars are quite low regarding mileage. Weighing the LS which will likely have wear issues as more time passes, I would decline.

I wonder if the car is still in good condition being that it is 11 years old and has 140K miles.

I would take it. I have a 1st generation LS400, a 1994, and it runs AWESOME. I've done repairs but nothing serious. The only thing was the PS pressure hose. Tip: if you need any parts for cheap, you can go to eBay. But if the car is free, TAKE IT. If there are any serious repairs which is doubtful, since Lexus has a high reliability rating, just think of it as "paying what you would have" I would take it. Hope it helps. It's up to you

well after all this advice have you made your decison ??

My boss's a shrewd business man. Seeing as i have interest in the car, he decided to let me buy it from him for under book value. .oh well....I'm happy i've got other two toyota's. For now - I have decided to decline it....(the car was towed to an impound lot). Two basic problems from what i could see...ac (like i described above) and my boss told me that a while back the steering would retract when you took off keys, thats stopped working. I already maintain a high milage lexus....(well its not expensive to maintain a lexus)..but to add another high milage lexus. Regarless, i am going with my boss's younger brother to get it out of the impound lot with the next few days...if the spur of the moment makes me buy the car..then i will. Will definately keep you guys updated....Thanks all!

How much does he want for it?
I own a 91 LS400 and it's still a very nice car. It doesn't compare to ES300's...
With proper care, it would last you a very long time with very nice ride.
It helps if you are handy...
I do have AC problem...
