Recently purchased a 1991 LS 400 with 88,000 miles had it checked out well before buying and am vey happy with one exception, when the air or heat is on their is a musty smell. This car was owned by on older person and had only 4,000 miles put on it in the last 4 years so it spent most of it's time garaged. Is anyone aware of something I can do to eliminate this.

I used to have a subaru outback that did that too. the guy at the dealership sprayed some kind of anti-fungus stuff in the a/c recirculator with the air on recirculate. It seemed to work great. I'm not sure what it was "can't remember it." But I do recall him telling me it was the same stuff hospitals use to make sure their vents are clean too. I bet if you call a body shop or something they'll be able to tell you. Just find where the air intake is inside your car, turn on the air with it recirculating and spray that stuff in the intake. Don't use lysol or anything like that, you want the heavy duty stuff. I used lysol once on my old maxima and it attracted about a billion little ants into the car. It was a freakish mess! I think what happened to you is the same to me. Fungus starts to grow in the a/c vents, especially if the air was on, condensation builds, and then it sits forever.

Maybe you should try changing the air filter inside the car under/behind the glovebox. I doubt it's ever been changed in your car.

Try that first.

A 91 doesn't have an air cabin filter and that wouldn't be the cause of the problem.
