key programming

I am concidering buying a 97 LS 400. The owner purchased a key for the car. The cars runs for 10 seconds then shuts off. It would only cost me about $60 to reprogram the key. However, the entire computer system may needs to be replaced which may cost about $3000. Are there any other alternative route to paying this much money to the dealer?

How does the person who has the car drive it presently?

If the ECU has not been changed, you can order a key from Lexus ($65) that will be ready to go. If not, you will need a working master so that you can add the new key/s. If none are present, then yes, you will likely have to have a new ECU and subsequent keys programmed for it.

That will certainly keep the mileage down. :D

I'd have the car plugged in to a diagnostic pooter to find the problem, it could be very serious beyond a key issue.
