Blacked out climate control LCD? Here's THE FIX!
As many of you know a blacked out LCD screen is a very common problem among first generation LS's. Mine was bad so I researched possible fixes because it was bugging me. You can't just go into a Lexus dealership and buy the LCD screen itself, you have to buy the whole unit 
. I knew there had to be another way; there is, you have 4 options. I knew you could send the unit to Mikado, but I was looking for the screen itself. After a while I found a guy who actually engineered a replacement LCD and was offering them for sale, Jim Walker. I contacted him and he told me the LCDs were arriving on 11-17-03, so I ordered one from him, they are $150+shipping. The screens are actually BETTER than the Lexus ones. Altogether it was a pretty difficult project but I got the new LCD replaced. I am so happy

Yet another excellent write-up! First the car stereo install made much less frightening and altogether do-able, the foglight change from ugly yellow to white, and now the a/c control made diy-able! Thanks! A donation to your site will be coming shortly. I am a proud supporter of retrodrive's site as well, I feel it is the least I can do to thank you guys for all this great info.

This is big because up until now you had to send the climate control unit in to get the screen fixed. Now there is the DIY option which saves you about $150. I just wanted to say that this is pretty hard. I do not recommend replacing the screen yourself unless you know how to solder well. Send it to Jim and he'll replace the screen for a small fee, $50, this is still a savings.
Also Jim's screens are for 1990-1992 left hand drive LS400s only. I think he's working on right hand drive models.
