To give you guys more detail before the car would hold 1st gear for a little longer than other ls400s did. It would just hold it while shifting like it didn’t really want to go out of first but then it would finally shift into 2nd and sometimes i would help it by letting go of the gas pedal . The car today still downshifts and engine brakes fine which i find weird because if it was something like a gear i feel like it wouldn’t engine brake as well as it did before, i can down shift into it and give it a little gas but then it starts to slip after putting heavy gas on it and then i’ll shift it into 3 and it drives fine outside of 2nd.
The best way to confirm your problem is to check the NO.1 ONE-WAY CLUTCH as this way below. But this needs to disassemble the AT unit and this is not for every one though.
It's a mechanical part and it doesn't like foreign objects coming in. Aisin's AT A340E is not designed to use the valvoline Dex/MERC and this might affect your AT's condition.

Reason: Correction A341E -> A340E

The 1995 LS400 uses the A340E if im not wrong, what’s the difference?
A long time ago I mistakenly put Valvoline in my 98 because it said it was compatible with Toyota T-IV. Long story short, it wasn't. Had all kinds of problems afterwards, but after 4-5 drain / refills of Toyota Type 4 the transmission was back to normal.

Congratulations on your fix.
Incorrect ATFs often damage the slip-controlling mechanism but lucky you that your repetition of drain / refills saved your AT. But I worry that the lifespan of the slip-controlling mechanism was affected some.
Hey guys I ended up getting a rebuilt one and now she runs better than ever 🤌
It make me a bit sad when wrong fluid seemingly sends a perfectly good high quality super durable transmission to recykling.
Mine is running fine stil after 28 years. Bought the car 8 years ago and then it was hard shifting and a bit strange when cold probably due to the 20 year old fluid.
I took the risk ( <100 kmiles so a reasonable risk for problems after the fluid change according to the general recommendations)
12 Quarts later with the correct fluid. Normal procedure is a number of drain and fills with driving in between it ran perfectly again.
I have since one more time put 12 more quarts through. But did that at yearly engine oil changes about 2 quarts at the time.
It is not possible to change all fluid 100 % you can just get the precentage new up in steps.
When you drain you can get 2-3 quarts max. It contains 9 quarts! .
I used MOBIL 3309 ATF which i claimed to be fine with these AISIN trnasmissions and it has worked with no problems.
Where I live Toyota type IV is either expensive at >20$ per quart or not available at all.
