RX300 interior green to white LED conversion

1 Attachment(s)
I've been converting the green lighting for the radio, switches and window controls to white LEDs. (Similar to what this guy did here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...0&pagenumber=1 ).

So far I have done the front and rear window switches. The effect is really cool and makes the interior look a lot more modern. Next job is to replace the bulbs for the gear lever, heated seat switches etc., then proceed on to the radio.

Some people have requested info on the mod, so here are some pictures and further info:

There is a mixure of 3mm and surface mount LEDs used for the lighting on the RX300. The radio (so I'm told) uses about 40 surface mount and 10 3mm LEDs.

Window controls are as follows:
Drivers side controls - 5 surface mount LEDs
Passenger side controls - 2 surface mount LEDs
Drivers side rear seat control - 1 3mm LED
Passenger side rear seat control - 1 3mm LED

LEDs are avilable online for about $40 (50 surface mount white LEDs and 50 3mm white LEDs) total from "Chi Wing LED product shop" on eBay.

Free shipping and about 7-8 days from Hong Kong.

Here is the front passenger window control PCB. It has 2 surface mount LEDs on the underneath that light up the door lock and window switches.

Here is one of the original surface mount green LEDs for the window control.

And here is the green LED replaced by the white LED. It looks yellow when off because a white LED is actually a blue LED coated with a yellow phosphor.

The LED is VERY VERY small (2mm x 1.25), and you will probably need 2 very fine soldering irons to get the green one off.

Here is the board with only one LED replaced. The original green one is at the top left. The white LED is much brighter, but once its installed in the switch housing its just the right brightness level.

More pics to come as this project progresses.

I'm still looking for help on how to take off the 2 control knobs on the radio ( https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...threadid=98611 ). If anyone has any info, please PM me.

Thanks

how do you put the new leds in ?

dbroekhove 03-09-10 12:13 PM

is it just a simple swap of of the led's, theres no additional wiring changes required correct? im about to undertake this project myself hahah just making sure its just as simple as taking old ones out and re soldering new ones in :) thanks for the help

Anyone else done this yet with a DIY? I'm in the middle of tearing out the circuit board for the radio and can't figure what is holding it down still.. got all the screws out, its practically floating in place, but what's holding it!?
