1990 Ls400 Headlamp Aiming
Hi Guys
My 1990 LS400 main beams won't aim properly. I tried the screw at either sides of the headlamp assembly. These turn but no light adjustment is apparent. I'm figuring that the cog/mechanism is stripped or worn. Any ideas? Are new units on the cards??!!!!!!!
Thanks!

I thought the same thing when I turned the screws and nothing happened. Fact is you should use a powerdrill since the ratio on the adjustment dears is like 8:1 or so. You have to sit and turn and turn and turn to see the lights adjust. It's like this for a precise adjustment.
I recently did a headlight restore project since mine were so busted that involved removing all the headlights, taking apart of the gear boxes, cleaning, regreasing, then polishing the glass and readjusting the aim. The adjuster gear boxes were seized which I why I had to clean and grease them.
It's about 2 hrs labor.

I had the same problem--turned the screws numerous times in both directions and then realized that there was adjustment only in a very limited range. I removed the housing--requires undoing 5 or 6 bolts and removal of the corner lamp--and as I was not confident in taking apart the gearbox I improvised. Besides, a simple headlight aiming had turned into a project and it was going on midnight. Basically, I just bypassed the adjuster bolt that comes up from the gearbox, and adjusted the entire assembly, adjuster bolt and gearbox and main bolt coming from housing all as one piece. It's a bit tough to describe, but once you are holding the headlight housing in hand, it will be evident what I'm talking about.
Had I the time, I would have done as Lvangundy suggests and do it right, but oh well, there's always next time.
Good luck!
Mike
