I've read in the various threads about taking your Lexus to Toyota to do work. However, from calling around my area, the difference in price is only about $10-20 per hour. I don't know where people are getting quotes for half the Lexus rate. For example, on a timing belt and water pump replacement, one Toyota dealer quoted $875 and another $725. The one Lexus dealer I called quoted $873. If I were to buy the parts online, it would be about $145. Lexus quoted about $205 for the parts. Does it make sense to go to an independenet shop? Thanks.
Call your dealers & ask them what their hourly labor rates are for various items. Most "premium" dealers Lexur, or other, are charging $90-110/h. While most Toyota / Indy mechanics will be charging $60-75/h at this point.
Same thing with Toyota VS lexus here as Nissan VS Infinity.
The local Nissan dealer just went up to $72/h, while the corrisponding Infinity dealer (of the same owners mind you) are now at $96/h. That was 2 months ago.
To add to that. What are are you having changed? The parts for just changing the water pump & belts by itself shouldn't run $300. The all-up price for that should be around $500 with labor.
find a reputable shop in your area, which in NY should not be to hard to find average price for T-belt & water pump in NY is about $350-$400 if you bring your own parts
& $450-$600 using theirs
depending on which borough or county u live in
T-Belt & h2o pump is something any knowledgeable mechanic with a decent amount of xperience should be able to do.
