I just got a sony cd player that looks awesome(m850mp), and from the specs looked as if it would put out some power (but haven't installed it bc mounting kit is being shipped), but it seems like from all of you that sony isn't very good for car audio. did i make a bad decision?

 

Their upper-end headunits are OK, and they've made some GREAT headunits over the years (even though I've had reliability problems) - but as for amps and speakers, they're basically trash.

 

Have to agree with Jerry. Some of the world class models include the Sony XES Z50, CDXC90, CDXC910, and the original XES system back from '91. I still have the C90 (modified) and it blew away my Krell CD player (KAV300 HIGHLY modded) in an a/b test. Not even funny as to how badly the Krell was beaten.

A number of years ago I worked at a repair shop for Ultimate Electronics. I'll just say that the Sony HU's passed through there in high numbers, along with....Alpine. But don't worry, the Apline units were usually not broken. Either they were in for a cleaning or the person didn't know how to use the unit. The Sony units were usually broken.
