I know this is a little old but since you bumped in April...

As near as I can tell there are two factors that determine order, and you are correct about one of them being ID3 tagging... however, that is only 'sorted' in the browse menus or via voice commands.

The actual folder order (i.e. how they appear in the folder list) is based on the 'created' timestamp it seems. I'm not sure how to make finder do this on a Mac, but in windows you have to do the following:
  1. If you don't already have all the files/folders 'pre-staged' in a single folder on your computer, do that now... if you do, then skip this step. (It's important that they're all in one place for step 3). This assumes you have the folder structure of Artist/Album/Songs or similar. Open that root folder and move to one side of the desktop.
  2. Format the USB stick (make sure it's FAT32 formatted - this is important so no existing file table entries are present on the stick). Open the USB drive in a second window and move to the other side of the desktop.
  3. In your source folder, click on the Last Folder first, hold SHIFT and click on the First Folder - then drag everything from that first folder onto your USB stick window (making sure your mouse is still on the first folder).
Now your folders should be copying to the USB stick in alphabetical order, so the earliest "Created Date" on the files will be the top "A" folder and the last will be the bottom "Z" folder (assuming your a fan of ZZ Top or Warren Zevon). Now when you put it in, without sorting anything, you should start playing the first "A" folder after the file check completes but before it finishes parsing all of the ID3 tags and the Browse function and voice commands become available.

It's easier to do this from the command prompt using xcopy or in OSX/linux via the cp command but also easier to mess up.

At least it works that way on both my wife's 2015 RX350 and my 2016 RC F. Not sure about older models.

Our son created a large USB music file for us to use in our 2015 Lexus ES350 and it would not work at all ("no music files found?). After seeing the advice on this forum he successfully reformatted the files and now they work like a charm...SUCCESS. Thanks to all for your advice and help.

I've used this very same flash drive in four other cars and have had no issues like this at all. Any known issues with using the USB port that you are aware of? Or any tricks to make it work properly?
Funny, I was just going to post on this problem.

If your Lexus doesn't see USB drive in both ports, try to format flash drive with big size clasters, it helps me when i chose 8192 bytes claster size for my 32gb usb drive.
UPDATE: this method doesn't work with my another 16gb USB drive, I have tried to format to 4096b, 8192b, 16kb, 32kb, 64kb claster size. Nothing help.

I have a 2021 rx350, and the terrible load time from a usb drive is about 45 minutes. Then once I can search I can find my song and play it. Then if I want to search for another song, I just lose the listing and can’t search. I driven Porsches and bmw and never ever had a problem loading music with art or tags whatever. I turn the key and I can play whatever I want not with this Lexus. Thank god it’s a lease.
