Default Looking for a respectful, knowledgeable Car Audio specialist NY/NJ/CT tri-state area

After my experience with one of the most spiteful, scumbag car audio shop owners in Nanuet NY, I am looking for someone who will treat me and my opinion with respect. I am always looking to save $ where I can, especially if another place is selling the same product for cheaper (This usually the case in any business, so if I bring recommended parts from somewhere offering for cheaper, they should not be offended, but only provide the service I ask and pay for.)

So on that note I am located in Rockland County NY, which is about 45 minutes north of NYC-Manhattan. I currently have a blown JLw7 sub, Alpine MRP-M1000 amp, and a sealed sub enclosure.

I am thinking of getting a custom sub enclosure that will fit on the left side trunk space of the 3rd gen GS, or maybe a custom enclosure that is a little nicer, but at the same time does not sacrifice too much usuable trunk space. I am not sure if I should go sealed enclosure again for the tight response which i loved, or a ported enclosure for more boom, but I WOULD NOT want to sacrifice tight response and hitting notes tightly for more booming sound/feel.

I plan on keeping the JL10w7, and getting it fixed by JL, whether it be sent in to them by this future audio shop or if I somehow figure how to get it to JL myself.

As for the Alpine MRP-M1000 amp, Nothing is wrong with it, but it did go into safety mode often (I guess to prevent overheating). I think I rather get a JL HD 750 to match the sub. Unless this future sound guy can recommend something better and explain it properly to me, rather than just saying "I been doing this a long time".

As for further work, I was thinking I want better mids and highs to match this powerful sub. But one project at a time.

If any one of you helpful people on this forum can help recommend the right guy, I would be truely grateful, Thanks.

i understand you wanting to save a buck...but...you must now understand that your favorite local shop has overhead and needs to make a profit to keep its doors open.. the internet has effectively destroyed the retail market.. by selling products (sometimes even cheaper than an authorized dealer can even purchase it for) from any and everywhere (china to timbuck3) the 1st issue: lies in the installing shop has no idea where the product has come from and if it will even work.. in an effort to curtail the purchase of online products we (and more an more shops) now charge a significantly increased labor rate (in short save on product pay more in labor...) same price at the end of the day.. so why not have a friendly face to go see "IF" any warranty issues come up..in addition we also expect customers to prepay labor on internet (or customer supplied) bought products..no counting how many products i have installed only to find they didnt work in the first place then inevitable argument from the customer that WE BROKE IT (lmao we're paid to install not break products)

2nd: if the other place is selling for cheaper then why not have them install it? oh yeah the guy in china "dont speek-e-no-english" lol..

3rd: if u purchased the JL sub online "good luck" on getting it warrantied (they may repair it IF it was purchased from an authorized JL dealer allowed to sell products online) JL has just opened theyre own ebay store so they are the only source now..if the shop you choose to do your work isnt an authorized JL dealer same thing...no go on repair or warranty.. and a lil bit of info u better have the original receipt or you'll send your sub in never to see it again... there is a tiny lil serial number INSIDE the speaker so they'll know exactly when, where an who the original dealer was... god help them if they were trans-shipping bcuz they will no longer be a JL dealer..

good luck with your install.. i'd suggest the sealed enclosure as a vented enclosure will be roughly twice the size of a sealed box.. if you do opt for ported make sure to use the subsonic filter as not to blow the sub...its way easier to blow a sub in a vented box...

if the amp was goin into protect make sure you have 100% OFC(oxygen free copper) pure copper wire not CCA (copper clad or colored aluminum) sounds like a voltage issue..an swap that oem batt for an optima red top (1000ca) not the yellow tops... increase your big 3.. and all should be good...

let me know how it goes

Thanks for your advice and opinion.

I understand business' need to make money. My whole issue was being insulted out of nowhere as I did not complain about the work they did and I did not accuse them of breaking anything. I had a hunch on how i blew the sub. I usually always warmed up the amp before really Bumpin it, but the one time I didn't in the 3 years I had it, it blew. As for "the internet has effectively destroyed the retail market.. by selling products (sometimes even cheaper than an authorized dealer can even purchase it for)", that is true and has been the case for a while now. If I had a shop I could go to where they were respectful, friendly and could actually help me get exactly what I wanted, I would gladly go there. What I didn't mention was this shop damaged the shifter panel (wooden/plastic panel piece near cup holders) and they left the trunk outliner (edge between rubber and trunk fabric) very loose, almost messed up, just unprofessional looking when they first installed 3 yrs ago. They also were arrogant and acted like they didn't do wrong until i showed the damage and they were speechless. So they had a couple strikes on them already, but I know of no audio shops near by. After this last experience I was uphauled.

Since I didn't clarify in the original post of this thread, saving a $ would be great, but for A+ quality work I'm def willing to pay. But for C+/B- work with the rudeness and arrogance, u can go screw yourself (this shop specifically). I only asked for an install 3 yrs ago, and only repair after blowing my sub this past month. I never accused the store of anything like breaking it, etc. Therefore i do not expect direct insults about me to another customer. People should remember about karma. Give others crap and you may get crapped on eventually.

I understand your prepay for labor policy on customer supplied goods, but I did ask this shop ahead of time what the problem was and I suggested a blown sub, but instead they suggested only to replace sub enclosure cup. They should have found out what happened first then told me what i had to replace. Instead of misdiagnosis and payment for that. That's where that problem lied. There was def a better way going about it then rushing to a misdiagnosis and accepting payment. They could have saved time, diagnosed correctly, and fixed it properly the first time around rather than we'll fix this part, insult you/the customer, and then oh yeah forgot to tell u we need to fix sub... Gtfoh.

As for the info on the JL repair, thanks for the info. I figured i needed to go to an authorized JL dealer. I really rather do business that cares about client owner rapport than going back to that scum. If i can't get it repaired, then I will sell the amp and re-do this with another shop that deserves business and is an authorized JL dealer

As for the battery, I replaced it to an optima red top last year (more for cold starts and so i can start the car after months in winter storage mode lol)

Lastly just wondering where you're shop is located.

sorry for your bad experience... it makes our whole industry look bad when people (such as the shop u dealt with) 1st do shoddy work 2nd backpedal an cover up...3rd NEVER BERATE A CUSTOMER!!!!! REGARDLESS WHO IS AT FAULT..

we go out of our way to do the best possible job (we treat the cars as if theyre our own) unfortunately accidents do happen and "IF" we are truly at fault we fix it!!! no questions asked..(i say if, bcuz some smartass always tries to get over but we inspect (pics&vids if necessary) before we start any work and walk around the car with the customer..

agreed a full diagnostic was paid for an should have been done.... sorry for that..theres no excuse...

unfortunately we are in orlando fl.... one of our guys is from rochester ny, i'll find out if he knows of a shop in or near nanuet (lol 1 of my fav uncles, lives there...... i need to visit (when it warms the hell up)) i knew a few shops in jersey (north jersey near the GW bridge) but i'd have to see if they are still in business..

you may try contacting JL directly and ask who is a key or top dealer in your area...i'm sure they'd be glad to help.. other than that

best i can say is do your due diligence and read customer reviews before you commit to any shop (check out their work) pics etc...any good shop is proud to show off their work.. and its not always the high dollar stuff.. look at the lil stuff... sure your gonna do a good job if someone drops $10k.... but the guy spending $100 should get the same LEVEL (lol) of service and professionalism..

I mean your attitude says it all. I'm sure you treat your customers right. And yes i need to do my homework and find a reputable shop to do this work correctly. I completely understand some customers try to nickel and dime the car audio shop owner, but yeh this time i felt helpless for the fact i never did anything of that sort. As a person i always feel like I need justice. In this case doing my homework and finding a great car audio shop would do it... Patience is key here i guess.. Since this car is a garage queen in the winter, I'll have time to find a place before it warms up and i get the itch. Thanks for you're opinion and advice. Everyone else, I'm still open to referrals!

Has anyone heard of DJ Auto Sound & Security in Greenwich Ct? They are a signature authorized dealer of JL (listed on JL website when searching this area) and they have good reviews online through Google search, stating good prices, good communication/straight up, and do good quality work. I called to make an inquiry about the blown sub servicing and they seem pretty friendly and helpful already. Will go in on Saturday... Let's hope I'm right.

Default this is the guy

Guy named Don from Unexpected Creations is the only one i trust...all you need to know is that he is on the list of top 100 installers in the US something like 5 years in a row. i simply can say that i have never dealt with anyone even close. He's in Edison NJ.
