battery vs. alternator
got a system in my car now and the lights everywhere dim, also want to play ps2 longer while sitting without the car on, would it be smarter to get a yellow top or a new alternator, i only have a 10w7 but i have three tv's and a ps2, what should i do and what would be the most efficent way of spending money on this type of thing thanks again, i think i should go with a new battery and if i should then where should i get it for the best price thanks
Depends which problem you'd prefer to remedy. Want to help your lights stop dimming, alternator. Ps2 Longer with the car off, battery. You can purchase a new alt or have it rewound at a shop...
Can't make it much clearer that Spoony did!!
Just an option to consider would be adding a capacitor or 2 to the system. We've currently ( HA-HA!!
) have another battery versus caps versus alternator thread going on here so take a look.

What kind of battery are you running now? It might have a low reserve, and could be just old...and needs replacing...you might also have to upgrade your wires...
There's huge trade off's here...I'd look into the other thread to see if your questions are answered...

so if i get this optima yellow top, how long will it last fully charged if the car is off and i am playing ps2, like 30 min, hour or what, mean if it will last an hour or longer than that is what i want

What wires would he need to upgrade?
What sort of load are you putting on the battery? PS2 + inverter? + stereo?
Figure out how many watts you are drawing, look at the amp hour rating on the battery... what currently happens when you run it too long? I don't know about you but I happily sit in my car for an hour with the stereo on, then start it up and drive away... If you can't do that, consider a new battery or a smaller stereo. If you must have 500 watts for an hour, you're going to need more than one battery.

Alternator will keep your system at 14.4 volts the whole time while you are driving if you get a good alternator. this ensures that your amp is working at an optimal voltage and will give out max power.
a battery will hold a charge so you can play your games and stuff with the engine off. it will also help with dimming lights because dimming lights will usually occur when the voltage drops below 12 volts. but if you get a good battery like optima it will stay 12.2 volts and will cure dimming lights and long time play.
i personnally got a battery first. i still am running on the stock alternator. if you have a good battery you don't really need an alternator if you give your battery a chance to charge like every morning with sound system off while your warming up your car.
