Replacing stock Subwoofer
Has anyone ever replaced the stock subwoofer with another free air sub. I am thinking of replacing mine with a 10' Pioneer IMPP, but I am used to huge bass from the fiberglass enclosure in my Mustang and I'm unsure of the sound quality. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i have changed my stock sub woofer to kicker c10 its 4ohms
the stock woofer is 1ohm. i also have an aftermarket amp powering all the speakers sounds so much better. it has just enough bass. i might be selling the sub eventually when i put to 12s in the truck

This might get better input in the electronics section, there was a debate about free air subs. In the past I replaced the factory sub with a JL 10'' IB4, it was a fairly easy install, but its not a perfect fit. The mounting holes dont line up, and it doesnt mount well so you'll need to get something. The sound was pretty good, but those subs can only do so much. They are not up to par with a good sub in a sealed enclosure imo. But if you just want a little more bass then its a good upgrade. Another problem is that these are 8 ohm subs, which means you'll need a pretty big amp to get the most out of the sub.
I dont see how a 12'' could fit without cutting, but I guess its possible.

I pulled out the OEM sub and put in a 12" kicker in a box powered by an alpine mono sub amp. The existing hole from the removed OEM sub is now the air port. The bass is fatt and sounds great... The only issue is the OEM head unit does not have isolated sub output so you don't have the precise bass control as other high end after market head units. If you can give up a little trunk space behind the rear seats you'll have much better deeper bass.... Also...I just have to unplug the sub from the amp if I need to remove the box for more needed trunk space..Haven't yet since the trunk has ample size.. Cost me around 500 bucks installed...including alpine amp, 12"kicker. and installation..
yea imho free air subs dont sound all that great....mayb its cuz im used to having subs in a sealed box. I had the stock 10' swapped for a ppi....but i didnt like the way it sounded so i yanked that out and made a custom enclosure for 2 12' IDQ's powered by a fosgate 1000bd amp. the enclosure is also ported like lev's into the existing hole where the stock 10' used to b...it sounds great for now
I much prefer a sealed / Ported / bandpass / free air configuration in that order but among all things weight and trunk room are now my main concern. NO MORE BOOM BOOM Base anymore....High Schools over guys.....
