Default USB IPod issues 2011 IS_F

I just picked up a 2011 IS-F with NAV/ML. It has a USB port in the console and a tab for USB in the Audio section of the display. I used this IPod with a DICE adapter in the GS I just traded in and had no problems. I could control the IPod when it was plugged in, at the IPod itself.

I have the following problem:

When the IPod is pluged into the USB, I have no control at the IPod itself. I have to use the track selection menu in the Audio screen. However, if I am listening to a long track, like an audiobook, the IPod starts the program at the same place each time, no matter where it stopped when I last listened to it. If I just listened to the book for a hour and stop, when I start listening again, the program restarts and I have to listen to the same thing all over again. I can unplug the IPod and FF to the spot and plug it back into the USB, but this is a PITA. I tried unplugging the Ipod before I turned the audio off, but that does not seem to make any difference.

Is there a solution for this?

Is there an aftermarket IPod adapter that will work with the 2011 and eliminate this issue? I can always use the USB to charge my phone instead.
