Default XM Woes in 2006 LX470 desperate for sound advice

I purchased a used 2006 LX470 that in Dec. 2007 had a dealer installed XM receiver 86180-0W031 plus fit kit 86100-0W200 with an antenna on the roof near the rear wind deflector. I called XM to activate the system. When I try to activate I get a no signal error message on channel 1.

So far XM has sent the activation message several times w/o success. Their tech support gave up and told me to contact dealer. My nearest Lexus dealer id 2 hours away. When I called the dealer they told me that they could check it but that they didn't actually do the work; they farm it out to a stereo store. I called a few Toyota dealers and they also don't really work on the XM system. I called the installer that one of them uses but he has no experience with the Lexus/Toyota OEM system.

At this juncture I am stumped and discouraged. Is this most likely a defective receiver? Could the antennae wire be damaged and thus no signal. I don't have a lot of time to drive hours to leave vehicle for diagnosis. I can get another receiver for under $200 but I don't want to go that route if it won't solve the problem.

What should I do to get this working? What is the most likely cause of the problem?

Thanks,
Dave

Toyota dealer checked system. Doesn't know for sure but assumes it is antennae. They wanted $315 for new antennae plus install but won't guarantee that it will work. I suggested that they get antennae and place it on roof, plug it into harness, and then see if the problem is solved. If not, don't waste hours installing it. Technician and first service manager said that they couldn't do this test. They had to install it fully. I called back and spoke with a senior manager and he understood what I was suggesting. This has been ridiculous so far.

BTW, called XM tech support with a question. Got some rep that read a script to me three times and then finally transferred me to tech support. After over 10 minutes on hold I hung up. I wish that there was truly a competing service...
