Navigation Gen 2/3 Upgrade from 2.1 to 8.1

So, I purchased a slightly used, but otherwide in perfect condition OEM DVD of Gen 2/3 version 8.1 to upgrade the 2.1 version I had in my 2003 RX300. The DVD loaded and updated fine, but I no longer have the ability to input destinations, POIs, etc. The options to do so are greyed out. Occasionally I will will start the car or after the car has been on a while they will become available for a short period, but then cut out again. Let me clarify that the car is not moving at the time I am trying input. Everything worked perfectly with the 2.1 version I had and the only difference is swapping the disc. I tried several things that others mentioned in their posts like disconnecting the battery for a short period and blowing the DVD unit out with air, but no luck. Can anyone shed some light on what the issue might be and how to correct it? I cannot imagine that it is a hardware issue. Thanks for the help!
