sub for 1st gen GS
What kind of sub should I look for to replace the factory one? I don't really want to replace the factory amp but I was told you have to to get a newer sub to work. Anyone have any experience? I just want a cleaner sound and deeper bass and I wanted to start by replacing the speakers and then maybe do HU and amp later. I want to keep the factory look. Thanks guys.
I'm about to replace the bass driver in my Mk I GS. I haven't done it yet so can't give you many practical tips. There are a couple of things to watch out for.
First, make sure you get a speaker designed for free air. Unfortunately, there aren't that many available nowadays. What you are building is a sealed subwoofer using the trunk as the enclosure. The driver must therefore be able to work in a large, sealed volume. Most car woofers are designed to work in small volumes and therefore need a cabinet.
Second, damp that fuel tank! I did my whole trunk not too long ago including the tank and, although I didn't notice much reduction in noise, the bass from the stock woofer went noticeably lower. No need to go crazy - just damp the large area panels that ring when you strike them with your knuckes.
Have a look at the Vifa MWR26 19 04 available from the usual speaker component suppliers. That's what I'll be using. It's in a different league to the usual Eminence pressed steel clones that your local car audio dealer will try to sell you, and it costs a lot less.
