Stereo Guru’s Pls Help: Sound cuts out mid volume and up (?!)
(re-post from 3GS forum)
I was in an accident -- pix below-- and my ML amplifer and wire harness (that goes between amp and head unit) were damaged in accident. Both were replaced in the repair; all repairs were done by Lexus. Got car back and discovered that the stereo cuts out when volume goes above a certain level.
Further details:
- Volume level at which it cuts out depends on:
------> how much bass is in song: on bass-y tunes, can’t even get above ~25 on the dial (sux!).
------> how long car/stereo has been on: after ~15 min. from cold, it cuts out at lower volumes.
- There is a “crackle” sound when it cuts out… like a zap.
- When lowering the volume, sound returns.
- Lexus thought it was a bad ML amp, so they tried a 2nd one and problem did not go away. I thought it was a bad amp too: like a bad current limiting sensor or thermal sensor inside the amp.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? The stereo was on when impact occurred, so could the head unit have been damaged? Is there a circuit in the head unit that would behave like this if damaged?
