Default HK Drive + Play - '98 LS400 question

Hi there!

I'm looking at installing an HK Drive + Play (the original B&W one) into my '98 LS. My goal is to do it in fully reversible fashion - no permanent wire changes, both because I don't like cutting up the wires and because the D+P seems to have gotten very mixed reviews.

My basic idea is to access the back of the head unit, put the wired FM transmitter in line with the antenna, then put the rest of the unit in the lower glovebox and run one wire out from there.

This isn't mainly for Ipod control - the main use is to patch streaming audio from my phone into the stereo system, so I don't have to worry about routing wires up to the center console and windshield.

Any D+P owners who have tried a similar setup? Does it work? And do I need to set the screen up (and just leave it in the glovebox) in order to get to 'auxiliary in' mode?

Thanks in advance!

i have a D+P system in my and SC and you have to scroll up/down and select the aux input -- therefore you do need the screen.

Although, if you're hooking up the D+P only for an aux input, I think there are easier ways to do this -- might want to do some research

hope this helps

I did do some research, but from what I've seen, the choices are the following:

1. PureDrifter's wire harness mod. I wouldn't have any trouble building it, but I'm a perfectionist and I'd spend hours making it 'just so.' Besides, I only paid $20 plus shipping for the D+P ... I doubt I could build the relay setup for that price?

2. Soundgate AUX3. Costs $35+ before shipping, and may still need a line driver (actually, PureDrifter's may need this too for my application).

3. Replace the head unit with one that has an AUX input. Most convenient once installed, but $300+ (plus a lot of hassle, and besides I like the factory head unit!)

What I REALLY want is a little box that converts inputs from my sound source (in this case a cell phone with an output jack - I use it for Internet radio from overseas) to a wired FM modulator. This seems as close as I've found, though. Suggestions?
