The Dual 2 Ohm will run off your amp as a 4 Ohm. So it will get 450 Watts RMS

See Here.

The Dual 4 Ohm will run off your amp as a 2 Ohm. So it will get 900 Watts RMS

See Here.

Definately dual 2's..

And yes you can run 4ohms with it for 450w.. But why wasn't it mentioned that dual 2's can also be ran as 1ohm, giving 1200w to the sub?

Ooops - Yup. Dual 2 Ohm in parallel will make for 1 Ohm @ 1200 Watts.

Good catch guys. I am still real rusty on the car audio stuff.

Here is JL Audio's Reference page.

RMS @ 4-Ohm: 1 x 450-Watt
RMS @ 2-Ohm: 1 x 900-Watt
RMS @ 1-Ohm: 1 x 1200-Watt

get the dual 2, wire them in parallel and get 1200w rms. enjoy.

Tortoise,
Are you going for sound quality, SPL or a combination? From everything I've read, the Kicker L7 isn't that great on either. I also looked and can only find the Qts (greater than .5) and an xmax of 14.5 mm. Where are the rest of the Theile/Small parameters or are they hiding something?

A Fi Q or BL has a better sensitivity and at least 50% more excursion. Not to mention they cost less. link.

You want to wire it like the first diagram - wiring diagram. That's wiring the voice coils in parallel.

alright thanks for clarifying. The rms on the sub is 1000 and at 1ohm the amp is 1200rms but 1. the amp might be rated low and 2. 200 watts over isnt too much i dont think. I just hope the shop i got to knows how to wire to 1ohm.

If you are worried, print the diagrams on the link I gave you. Really, if they don't know how to wire a dual 2 ohm sub for a 1 ohm load, then they shouldn't be installing stereos.

Remember, that is the power the voice coil can handle but not how much power is needed to push the sub to its mechanical limits. With only 14.5mm of excursion, it should take a lot less power to reach the max. Pushing past the limits can test the suspension or crash the voice coil into the back plate. Both can destroy your sub. The Brahma Power Handling technical doc is specifically for Adire's line of drivers but the same logic applies to EVERY subwoofer. WinISD or Unibox are great pieces of software for determining not only proper enclosures but determining how much power your sub can handle before it reaches its mechanical limits.

if the shop you go to doesn't know how to properly wire up a sub....they don't deserve to be in business.
