i used a universal pocket that you can buy at any audio store. i work at circuit city in car audio install so i grabbed one off the wall. its a universal pocket that is used for toyotas. i the factory mounting holes for the radio make it sit too far forward. they make the radio stick out a lot and look weird. i drilled holes a little back of the factory ones. i mounted the radio and it sat further in.

you can go to my photobucket folder at see the pics of the stereo. if you have any more questions just PM me.

for the piece around the radio i used ABS plastic sheet and trimmed it to fit the radio.

im looking to do something similar on a '98 400... so did your alpine mount right into the stock mount once you drilled new holes in the head unit 5sp_jzz30?

i didnt drill new holes in the headunit. i drilled new holes in the mounting bracket itself. you can use the factory holes it lines up perfect but the radio was sticking out too much for my liking. i wanted the HU to be flush with the storage pocket above it.

if you use the factory holes the radio sticks out some and you will most likely need to use the trim ring that comes with the HU. i didnt want to do that.

I did almost the same as your setup. I mounted my alpine in the center using the factory brackets with the existing holes. I then used strips of balsa wood that I painted and textured to look like every thing around it. This is a really bad pic but you can kinda see what I did.

So the shop that was supposed to have it was shut down for a week because of the owners wife passed away and all employees went to the funeral. I was going to go and get the piece monday, but I had other things to do, like getting a new driver side window for my car!! some idiot decided he didnt like my window and busted it out with a piece of wood!!

Im sure the piece is at the shop, so as soon as I can I will go by and pick it up.
