Default lost keys

I have a question, I was advised by a lexus dealership that in order to replace my lost keys, the need to replace the ecu, and lock cylinders. Is this true? If so why? Do all cylinders need replacement? Thanks for help.

Default True

Depending on which year and model that is the only way a Lexus dealership can get you new keys. Why they want to replace the lock cylinders is beyond me.

However, they do need to replace the ECM because the chip the contains the key information is isolated and can't be accessed by a scan tool.

You do have an alternative.

Call your local automotive locksmiths and find out if they reflash Lexus ECM's.

A locksmith that has the proper equipment can originate new keys for you and reflash the ECM.

Reflashing is basically resetting the value on the chip back to factory default. At that time new keys can be programmed in. The Lexus dealership can not provide this service to you.

Take care,

Tami
