Default Having a problem that's hard to describe

When I'm in manual mode, for example going 30 or so in 3rd gear, if I let off the gas, let the tach drop, and then hit the gas, something in the transmission or driveshaft jolts. Or clunks. Or thunks. Geez, English sucks. It's hard to describe, but it's very noticeable in the car. It does not feel normal. It's not just a noise—it's something you can feel. In non-manual mode, it still does it, but it isn't as noticeable due to the downshift.

Other than this, the car seems to shift ok in and out of every gear, both in manual and regular mode. 130K miles on this 2008, and I've only owned it for 5 months or so. I searched and didn't find anyone else with this problem, though that could be due to that fact that it's hard to describe.

Any ideas?

Bad U-joint or bad (worn) or driveshaft flange adapter thing? (guibo, driveshaft flange, flex joint, flexible coupling... the part between the driveshaft and the rear diff flange, made of rubber material. I think theres one on the front and rear of the driveshaft.

Could also be worn engine mounts or trans mount, flopping around.

*edit*
Or the driveshaft carrier bearing

Are your headers cracked by chance? Ticking noise on startup?

Sounds more like the lock up torque converter. At a dead stop the converter is unlocked, as you accelerate it slips
to provide smooth shifts but then locks to promote improved MPG and quieter operation. As your symptom appears
at around the speed the computer would signal to lock up but you are coasting down it may become confused.

I've never been around a car with confirmed cracked headers, so honestly I can't tell you. She makes a couple little noises on cold startup that go away, but nothing loud or annoying.

Ok I just got back from driving the car at lunch. It's definitely doing it in non-sport mode as well. It just isn't as pronounced due to the downshift. I'll update the OP.

Do you hear it in the back? Could be the differential bushings.

I know this isn’t helpful but it’s hard to say.

Has it done this since you bought it, or did it just start doing this?

Driveline noises are most often a result of a previous owner's abuse.

Honestly I don't know. I let a friend drive it a few days ago while I was with him, and when he punched the gas in 2nd while we were going very slow, he asked what that clunk noise was. Ever since then, I have noticed it.

Are you sure what you're hearing isn't exhaust related?

Yeah I'm 100% sure it's not exhaust. You can "feel" it. It's not just a noise.

I can feel when my exhaust pops. At first, when I bought mine 8 years ago, I thought it was transmission related or something wrong with it. But it was just the exhaust popping when you get on it right after deceleration. There's a thread about this here. It might be worth checking out to see if this what you're feeling/hearing.

yes there's a popping sound when deceleration and acceleration happens, you can hear it more with exhaust
