It's been about a month since I pulled my subwoofer out because it was hardly working and when it did, was distorted. Was hoping the foam around the sub was damaged, a pretty easy fix. What I found was the top I guess you would call the voice coil was badly cracked, possibly from sun exposure.
Was going to just replace it but was having problems finding something that would fit in the stock location. So before reinstalling, I grabbed a spray can of clear Plasti Dip I used to coat the cabinets under all the sinks in my house to prevent water damage. Anywho...it's a flexible coating and I thought it may work for sealing the cracks. I put a really heavy coat on the sub and reinstalled. Left the radio off for a few days to let it get good and dry.
That was allmost a month ago and yesterday I had the windows down and the radio up to about 60 and I had to keep adjusting the bass down because it was thumping so hard. Clean, no distortion.
I have no idea if this will work for anyone else, but so far it's working great for me. Would think any kind of flexable coating should work as long as it adheres well to the speaker. Didn't take pictures but I'm attaching one found online. I sprayed the entire top section, the reddish brown looking paper. Mine was cracked around the wires and in other places as well.
I was never able to fine a "better one". All the threads I have read says there is nothing that fits well in the stock location. Please enlighten us if you have found something.

Thanks
I did a little project with this a while back. It's still works today and I love it. Disregard that I said easier, but it wasn't super hard to do. Some have reached out to see if I can make a kit for it.. We'll I don't have much time currently as I'm planning a meet. Link below to what I did.
Appreciate the update! My sub gets distorted/rattles like its blown and then all of the sudden, it fixes itself so not sure if something is coming loose or what. My F hasn't seen a lot of seat time since wfh situation has started last year but I might have to just take a look since I have a can of black plast dip somewhere in the garage.

Exactly what mine was doing. The paper cone on top was cracked on mine and probably is on yours.
The Plasti Dip I used was clear, but any color should work.
Finally got around to looking at my rear sub again. Well, the failure was different this time. The plasti dip is still holding but the wires between the center cone and the speaker were broken.
Can't see it too well in the picture but i bypassed the wire woven into the cone and soldered in high flex stranded wire. The sub is up and running again, and I actually think it's much improved.
Those wires were probably broken for a while.and I was never getting full power to the sub.
The white you see on the surface is the plasti dip. The surface is holding up really well with no further cracking.
