Default Suspension project begins: Pilot 4S and RR Racing Road and Track coilovers

As it’s almost spring, time to start on the suspension upgrade program.

Had a major rear tire tire blow out last Sunday. Big hole in the center of the tread, no known culprit, and total/rapid loss of pressure. Thankfully I was able to get off the highway immediately and pull over to change out the tire.

So, I ordered 275/30 and 245/35 Pilot 4S. Dang, the sidewall is really, really low profile on these! I’ve seen this setup in person before with the PSS and it looked good with a drop, but man that sidewall is small!

I ordered the RR Racing Road and Track coilovers tonight and will trek up to have Rafi install them. Pretty excited about this.

Fairly certain that this set up will offer a dramatic difference in ride and looks. I think with the 245/275 set up, you have to lower for looks.

Will post impressions as they come.

Really curious of ride quality and performance of RR racing Road and Track coilovers. Thinking of either these or KWv3. My summer tires, are 255/35/19F 275/35/19R. My F is DD that I use to commute to NYC 5 days week. NYC doesn't have the greatest roads so I'm looking for coilovers that will give me performance on back roads where I live but compliance on roads of NYC. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, it will help me to determine which coilovers to with.

Yeah, me too! The problem with coilovers is that you never know what they are going to be like until you get them on. The risk is with the singly adjustable coilovers (rebound only) that the compression is not spot on and you can’t change that. This is why I’m going with Rafi bc I know they’ve actually tested these on the car and have first hand experience. The doubly adjustable Penske’s are just too much to spend for my purposes. But, having that double adjustability would pretty much guarantee you could dual it in exactly as you’d like. That’s where I’m counting on Rafi’s experience to come in. The KWs from what I’ve read are soft and since I’m not dealing with bad roads on a normal basis, I’d rather keep the set up firm.

Stage 1 complete without drama (surprisingly). Tires on. The 245/35, 275/30 combo doesn’t look bad, even without a drop.

Didnt push the tires hard, but under light load/Gs, can’t tell too much difference compared to the Supersorts, not that I was necessarily expecting to.

You'll notice the increased grip. With these, I regained my first gear back.

Your picture makes it look as though you have positive camber in the rear. Next step should be an alignment / corner balance, esp. with new tires.

It might be because the tire is sitting on a Lexus trunk mat on the floor that it looks that way, I had the alignment checked about 5k miles ago and dealer said it was fine—didn’t get the numbers, but they didn’t offer to align, so I assumed it was ok. Tire wear on previous set was normal even though tread was very near the wear bars. But, I will get it done once I get the coilovers on soon!

Pls. accept my apology for post #12. I misread your post & thought coilovers had already been installed.

Looking forward to your review on the RRs. I likely would have chosen these if i hadn't found some ohlins locally.

Looking forward to your review on those Road & Track coilovers!
