For the not so faint of heart, it might make sense to retrofit GS F pistons and rings into an IS F block for more power (only a tiny bit) and for less blowby (maybe a lot). Notice the standard gap on the oil control ring is HALF what the IS F and RC F specify. That's very significant for oil control!
Its ironic that the maximum wear limit is the same on all the ring end gaps ??

In a way. Maximum limits are not for performance, they're for basic function. I would never assemble an engine with gaps that big regardless of intended purpose. I'd tell the owner it's time for a new block, pistons, and rings since there are no oversize options available.

I once put together a Honda 500 single with a big bore kit from Wiseco (I call them Seizeco from my experience) and the piston fit was perfect, but the rings were way too loose. I told the owner, and he said there's nothing we can do about it, so we'll just have to run it. I was really unimpressed. I normally like to buy oversize rings and trim them for the gaps I want based on intended use just to avoid BS like this.

I really suspect Toyota went soft on the ring specs expecting their OEM AOS would be sufficient along with catalytic converters. I have my doubts about this being a good engineering decision.

Agree ^^^^ maybe the bore oil squirters add a bit to much oil with slightly worn rings ???

That's an interesting thought I had not considered. Indeed, this could be at the root of the excessive oil vapor issue.

So in theory the AOS does actually help the ISF.

Thanks Lance. I'll try M1 after my 5-gallon stash of RLI is depleted. I didn't see RLI on his list, btw... though they are a really small company, so I'm not surprised.

I was thinking of sending him some to see what kind of numbers it produces. He says he gets requests all the time, so why not? If it equals or is better than M1, I'll switch in a second.

Great idea... What flavor of RLI did you order? I can send some in too if it's different.

I haven't ordered it yet. Need to find out how much the guy needs first.

Ok... I've got the .2 quarts times two so almost half a quart of could contribute.

I posted a request in the blog today. He has instructions for sending oils to be tested, so I'm just confirming he'll be able to take on the work at some point.

Great! Just PM me an address and amount - I've a few extra 2oz containers left over from those Tribologik kits Daniel sent some of us, if that's enough by chance.

He responded to my post. He did say his testing queue is full for now until February.

For those that haven't seen this issue or haven't heard of it... I've seen in in my car in person. The issue isn't when running it hard, it's running it hard and then either going to idle or shutting it down afterward. I had this happen at Autocross, but not at a track session. The track you usually have a cool down lap which will eliminate the intake oil. At autocross you run it real hard then go to the pits. I've found that after you run hard you need to take a lap around the pits. Idling will not help a whole lot. moving and getting above 1500 rpm helps more. It seems when running as hard as she can then suddenly stopping you have an influx of oil in the intake... I think I'm going to go for the separator myself due to having seen the issue in person.
