Default Fan Radiator failure at 36K miles in 08 ISF

Feel like I really dodged a bullet here. Luckily on my day off I noticed a burnt plastic odor and took my 08 ISF to the dealership in minutes. The tech found that a radiator fan motor failure melted Fan shroud and replaced everything (motor,Fan Blade, Shroud) under my Lexus Platinum extended Warranty. The dealer cost of this repair was 835.00 dollars and would of cost me more if I had to pay for it.

Has anyone heard of this issue? This could of been a potential disaster if I wasn't so close to the dealer.

I bought my flawless 08 ISF in May 2012 and qualified for the lexus platinum extended warranty since there was still a month left of my original warranty. I paid 1760.00 for an additonal 4 year or 75K miles through Jerry Johnson and so grateful I did.

Dealer fixed issues with no questions and gave me loaner car.

I also fixed my aux in port under warranty to solve engine noise issue last month with 250.00 repair covered and now a 835.00 repair covered.

My advice is buy the lexus extended warranty if you qualify.. Well worth the peace of mind!

You'd have to be insane to buy a pre-owned performance car without an extended bumper to bumper warranty. There's two types of people who buy performance variant cars. Those how baby them and those who slam the crap out of them. You're playing russian roulette if you purchase one without full coverage warranty protection.

Could I ask where Jerry Johnson is located at? My warranty is going to expire this October and I need to get this extended warranty just for the peace of mind for the next 4 years.

Herry is located in Kansas. Do a search here on CL and you should find him.

Looks like a similiar situation that happen to mine....

My observation was that one of the screws on the secondary fan motor some how backed out...
Which caused the fan motor and blade to jamb up. Eventually the motor spun through the fan center core..
(causing the burnt plastic odor)

I replaced the Motor & Blade my self and also got new screws.. I had no shroud damage..

Every oil change or so I inspect the 3 screw bolts on each fan motor, to make sure they are still 100% in place..

Sorry for the old thread bump, but hopefully it's relevant.

I went out to start my 2011 IS-F and got this noise from the radiator area. I'm only at 22K miles.
Does this sound like I'm having the same problem?

Jesus that sounds terrible. Why don't you take a peak around? If you're not mechanically incline...take it to the dealer

Oanda,

It could be the secondary fan motor & blade....

I noticed mine failed because my car would start shaking. I turned the heat to Max and looked under the hood at the fan. It was wobbling pretty bad. That's how I knew there was something wrong with my fan.

Sadly, if one of the 3 screws that hold the motor in place, get loose... The rest is history..!!

Those screws can benefit from loctite.!!

same thing happened to me. 2008 with 19,000 miles when it happened. burnt plastic smell.
would have been pricey without warranty.
guess it is a common problem.

Thanks all for the feedback.

The problem was exactly as you described. Fortunately, I didn't have far to get to the dealer and arrived with no collateral damage. They had to order the parts so I'm in an RX until Monday.
