Belt slip noise in manual mode shifting >5.5k rpm?
 

There are a couple random posts about this, but has anyone experienced this noise before?

Car is:

1) Warmed up
2) At a standstill
3) In manual mode, 1st gear
4) Traction control is on/normal
5) Sport mode is on/off (doesn't seem to matter for this example)

How to verify:

1) Hit gas, more than 3/4 down
2) Shift above 5500rpm
3) As transmission up-shifts a drive belt squeal is heard.
4) Car otherwise accelerates normally.

This happens on two IS-Fs I've driven, a 2009 and a 2010, with or without the AC on. Is this a common issue? If so, what belt is slipping?

I know exactly what you are talking about. When my car was stock I could hear that noise, but ever since I got exhaust I haven't. I'm sure the noise is still there and most likely normal, but it's odd and just another reason to get some exhaust on the car. :D

are you talking about "2nd gear scratch"? if so, pretty common on any manual car but i think our cars produce enough power to do it too... just tire squeal if that's what you are talking about...

^Definitely not tire scratch, since it's coming from the front of the car. Try it using the method above, if you have a safe place/enough space to do it. Also, you'll need the windows down to hear it.

As the transmission shifts there will be a change in force on rotating components and I think what I'm hearing is the serpentine belt having some issues with that. The car still accelerates like mad, but it just kind of sounds stupid...as all belt squealing does.

If the TC is turned off, an up-shift at those rpms will cause the rear tires to spin since it appears that is the path of least resistance.

^caymandive: exactly! at 12-13s in your video, that's the squeak I hear. What the hell is it?

I just noticed the same thing with my 2010. What is it?? Any clues ? Is there something that can be adjusted? Or is this a sign of tranny issues ( serpentine belt) or just a bad engine belt ( accessory belt)

Sounds like the accessory belt pulley. Had mine replaced on the 08 ISF around 65k miles.

Thanks for the heads up. Its funny because I just barely started using manual mode but haven't launched the car in manual mode. I launched from a stand still and you can hear the chirping noise just when I get over 5000 rpm and shift in manual. Its generally only noticeable in first and second gear. After third you are going so fast you can no longer hear it. In sport mode it doesn't do it. Seems like the faster and harder shifts are putting some strain on the belts or pulleys .Im going to have them look at the car when I take her in for oil and service.

Anyone else have this issue?? I know its a belt but I am hoping its nothing in the transmission. If its just an accessory bely pulley thats no big deal.

Never knew what this was but my 08 @ 55k miles makes the same noise as the video

There was an LSB quite awhile back for a new serpentine belt tensioner - L-SB-0164-08. The newer cars should already have the redesigned part on them.

I've never noticed this, but I've always had a helmet on and the windows down at the times I would be most likely to hear this. Not sure if that's possible with all the wind noise going on at the track.

mine sounds different than the video, but it's driving me absolutely insane. it doesnt matter how much throttle im laying down, but as i accelerate in M mode and surpass 3-4000RPM or so, there's this winding-up noise that kinda sounds like a supercharger. i asked the dealer when i got my 60k last month, and he said the techs didn't hear anything. but there's no way somebody wouldn't hear it if they were in M and listening for it (w/ radio off and windows up)

I have an extended warranty and want this to be fixed without charge, but I cannot help but worry that a belt might snap while im driving and potentially cause an accident hurting somebody or at best severly damaging the motor.

anybody got any ideas or suggestions?
