Just changed the rear diff fluid on a 2011 ISF at 29,900 miles. Replaced it with Redline 75W-90 GL5 rating.
The magnet on the drain plug had a nice gooey layer of shavings, and the diff fluid color was a little bit dark red going on black.
If you drive hard and power out of corners a lot (ISFs with torsen LSD,) I would recommend changing it at 30k or earlier. I think changing it at 60k is a little too long.
how does one 'inspect' the rear differential oil to know it needs a changin'?

Don't bother inspecting it. If you know you have been rough with the car or have 40000miles on it, replace it. This is for 2008 to 2009. I think the diff with LSD (2010-2014) requires replacing earlier. It's an easy job, drain from the bottom and fill on top until the fill hole spills over. Keep in mind, the fluids for non lsd and with are different.
make sure you open fill port first, you dont want to drain it first and find out you cant open the fill port for whatever reason. General statement for changing fluids. You can get Mobil1/Valvoline 75W-90 synthetic diff oil for $10/qt
Somebody is trying to make you pay more for than you need. Any GL-5 gear oil is sufficient. Even the weight isn't a big deal for street applications. If you are tracking or drag racing, then you might want to consider a premium oil designed for shock loads, but for normal street use, it's not a big deal at all.

your fill procedure sounds accurate to me. That's how I did my is350 diff fluid change; I used Redline.
The service schedule on the lexus site doesn't mention diff fluid change anywhere but I see a lot of us have done it. Are we changing as a preventative measure? My11 BTW.

1.7 quarts. Any GL-5 oil will do. I ran Redline in mine before I put the OS Giken LSD in it. Now I run Giken's oil exclusively.

Curious are you running a OSG diff? Will the 80W-250 be too heavy for my stock 2012 diff? I was about to pull the trigger on my 60K with Motul Gear 300 LS. Yes, I am running the OSG spool. Otherwise I'd keep running Redline in it. There is no need for LS oil even if you have the Torsen. LS oils are made to work with clutch type limited slip spools only. You will gain nothing by running an LS oil in a Torsen as they are completely gear operated. Also, because these units are typically delivering a 500k mile service life, there's no point in exotic oils unless you are drag racing or doing some other kind of shock loading that might cause premature diff wear. There was zero discernible wear in my open diff when I put the Giken TCD in, and I'd only changed the oil one time.
Me? Probably will change at 50k intervals. I drive on the track. It's a bit more arduous than street duty.
So Lance, my 2011 with 85k with No issues no leaking etc Spirted driven daily driver what would you recommend? Top off with fresh oil if needed and call it day or just change out with fresh oil. And would you do same for tranny oil as well?
