Arrow First Look: IS-F LSD Swaps w/pics (been happening in Japan)

As it all started in this thread....

Retrofitting Mechanical Limited Slip Differential (LSD) 08-09 ISF

and the BUZZ on the Torsen LSD units, coming standard in the 2010 IS-F..

I figured it would be a good time to show you all what they have been doing in Japan for almost a year now..!!!

I know at least 2-3 capable Lexus Techs here in SoCal that should have NO ISSUES cracking open an IS-F differential to do this swap..

I just need to figure out if I should get the OS Giken LSD or the Toms Japan LSD

or stick with the much easier solution..

1) 2010 Lexus OEM Torsen Unit for the IS-F
  • NO price or part number just yet

2) TOM's LSD Unit
  • Part# 41301-THD06 for the IS-F / 1 way type.. Price = $2,040 USD

3) OS Giken LSD Unit
  • 1.5 way type.. Price = $2,700 USD

Some IS-F LSD install pics I found, done by "iCode" & "dwest" in Japan..

Stamped OS Giken USA, but this is in Japan..!!

That is all I have for now!! But more will come soon...

Enjoy,

Joe Z

Ya and I think the prices are a bit off as bulletproofautomotive has those LSD's listed for higher, more like around 3000+ usd for the LSD units. Also I found out that Japan tested the 2010 ISF and ran 2 seconds faster laptimes around Fuji speedway comparing to the 08/09. Anyhow nice find Joe Z.

Hi Andy..

Nope, the prices I posted are spot on..

They are the exactly converted JP YEN price.. when I did my research..

Toms = $189,000 Yen
OS = $249,000 Yen

FX Rates change daily.... But not by over $900 to $1,000 USDs

Regards,

Joe Z

Hmm maybe the prices on bulletproof is marked up and the costs of bringing it over here are included as well. Cuz i know when i use to order stuff from japan, it was never exact converted prices to our dollar. Have to add the duties and shipping costs for bringing it over here.

The thing about the IS F and its mechanical LSD story, is basically that it should have been put in there to begin with. Whether or not people may agree that LSD is only of any use when you use it for the track and not for road use. But For me it's psychological too, but now that we know that it can be done without very many problems or issues, I am going to wait for the torsen one, order it and do a straight swap, i don't think the electronics going to be too fussed with the new LSD.

I'm just gonna wait for JoeZ to do it first haha!

JoeZ, what is the difference between the torsen/toms/giken LSDs?

I know toms is a 1 way, and the giken is a 1.5way can you explain the differences ?

many thanks!

In simplified definition is 1 way LSD means that traction is dispursed to each wheel only when your on throttle, 1.5 way means 100% traction on throttle and 50% off throttle, 2 way means 100% both on and off throttle. This is just my knowledge of the differences between 1, 1.5, 2 way LSD's. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is very interesting, I might have to look into them. Kind of expensive tho.
