Has anyone modified their stock IS turbo stock intake box to allow for more sound?
I am fine with the performance of my IS 300 RWD and I am unwilling to use a high-flow aftermarket intake to increase sound or power. I saw a post from E46CT where he modified the lower intake (before the filter) after swapping the stock air filter for F Sport and removing the carbon filter. He said there was too much turbo whooshing but I didn't see any mention of how large the hole was that he created to allow for sound. Not to mention, everyone has different preferences as to how much sound is acceptable. For me, I can't even hear the turbo day-to-day because the Lexus IS so much quieter all around than my BMW was. I don't want the car to sound like a vacuum cleaner, but if a 1x1" hole in the front-facing portion of the intake before the air filter would allow for just a bit more sound without any of the negatives, I'd be interested in trying it. I'm just not sure there is a great way to seal it back up afterwards if it sounds bad.

For the turbo engine, if you want a very loud sound the AEM intake is the way to go. Its very loud and will probably break necks when you drive by. I run the injen intake since it uses the stock intake box and its a nice sound, not to loud but not to quiet!
There are plenty of vendors in the vendor section for our gen or cars that have sales all the time!

The hole isn't a 1" square. It's more like 4" by 3"--the same or similar to the factory hole in the factory F Sport box. All i did was try to copy Lexus. Of course you can cut a small hole and see how it sounds and work your way up from there.
The sound isn't as loud as Hondas back in the day when you take off the silencer but there is a noticeable growl. I'd call it on the upper range of noticeable, but not annoying or unliveable.
I sealed the hole back up using a wall plate covering blank piece of plastic and some plastic pop rivets. fit perfectly. And car is quiet like stock again.

I too cut a hole in the lower portion of my intake box. Speaking formy 350, it made a large difference in sound. The entire car sounds different. It was almost as great of a change as my axle-back exhaust.
