Default Trunk opening randomly

Hi guys,

I have a 2014 IS350 and the trunk randomly opens as if I’m pressing the trunk open button on the key fob. Has this happened to anyone? I tried searching but no solution. Thanks.

When is this happening? While driving? Car on? Outside?

Assuming that when you leave the car parked, the trunk is closed, consider the following:

1. How far is your key from the vehicle when it's parked?
2. Where is your key?
3. Where is the second key?
4. Does the car have any aftermarket accessories that would interact with the trunk opening circuit? i.e. remote starter
5. What are the weather conditions when you find the trunk open? i.e. after it rains

I realize some of them might seem like BS questions, but since we'll likely never see the car in person, they help you to think of the situation outside of what you've considered already and hopefully land on an answer.
There's only 3 ways to open the trunk from outside the trunk...the lower dash button, the remote button, and the trunk button by the license plate lights.

thanks for the reply. I suspect it is the key fob. The 2 keys are normally next to each other about 20 feet away from the car. My wife is at work today and my key is the only one in the car’s proximity. So far, no random trunk pop ups yet. I have no aftermarket accessories that would affect the trunk latch. And the weather the last few days have been dry and sunny.

If you think it's the fob, then keep one 20 ft away and the other as far as possible...or put it inside something that will definitely block any signals from it...like a safe.
20 ft even through two walls will still reach the vehicle for a trunk open signal...not that i've tried or anything lol
If the trunk doesn't act up, then switch the keys to see if it's the other key.
If the trunk does act up, then switch the keys to see if it stops.

Any chance this might have happened after washing the car? Thinking of possible water intrusion into the trunk actuator.

I removed my other key fob’s battery and the trunk opening stopped. I wonder if it starts acting up when the battery gets low. I just changed the battery 6 months ago. There was no prompt in the car stating that the battery was low. I’m going to replace the battery and see if that fixes it.

Actually quite the opposite, as the battery dies the range will become less, therefore not being able to do anything with the vehicle from any significant distance.
And you're correct, if the battery was low the vehicle will prompt you.
You could replace the battery just to rule that out, but honestly I think it's just the remote that is the issue.
Did the remote ever take an impact or fall in water/liquid? Maybe pop it open just to see what the inside looks like.
