Brakes-the joke is on me
You guys pulled a fast one on me, but I'm a good sport, I can take a joke.
2014 IS 350 F Sport. All this talk about the brakes needing new pads after only 12K miles or so got me a little concerned since I'm up to about 34K, so I ordered new pads and they arrived yesterday. I was going to wait until Sunday to do the work, but it's supposed to be such an easy job that I decided to do it this afternoon when I got home.
First, the non-joke part. It is supposed to be a quick and easy job and I agree completely with that opinion. Pull a clip, tap out a pin, and slide out the pads. Nothing to it.
Now the joke part. You had me convinced that at 34K I would desperately need new pads. Ha, ha, ha. Like I said, I can take a joke. I pulled a pad out, compared it to the new pads and put the old pad back in the car. I'm sure the old pads will be good for another 20K if not more.
I'm old and I drive like a grandpa, but you guys must be really hotrodding your cars.

i'm glad you posted up because i was sitting here thinking the F sport pads must be made of sawdust with how fast people go through them. Good to know it's just driving habits causing them to die out quickly.

That would be some kind of record if you could get 54k on the OEM F-Sport pads regardless of driving style. But hey maybe you do a lot of highway miles that don't require you to brake very often.

I changed my pads at 20k just because the dust was insufferable. They were about half worn, so I guess I'd have gotten 35-40k and I drive pretty gentle for the most part. But really pad wear wasn't so much an issue as the rotor wear. Maybe I could have gone 35k but I already have a 1mm lip on the rotor at 20k. Even if folks could get 30-40k out of the pads, your rotors are probably done then too.

I am not old (relatively? I mean I turn 30 in 4 months), but I am still running stock F Sport pads at 21k miles. The pedal doesn't feel squishy or anything. The rears squeak a bit on cold days sometimes, especially after rain, but otherwise they feel fine. I do go for a "spirited" drive once in a while, too.
Idk, I am probably an outlier because I also have the stock Turanza all-season tires as well. Inner tire wear started to rear its ugly head but got it fixed with alignment. Also I don't have stop and go traffic. Like, at all. I know a lot of forum members are in areas that do, and that will certainly wear down some pads.

You won't know pads are worn until you look. Peddle feel isn't determined by how much pad is left. I've had friends with racing brakes that were down to less than 1mm with no change in feel. I see OP is in Nevada, it might mean less traffic, so less braking, so less wear. Yes, these pads have more dust, noise, and wear faster, it's the cost of greater performance unless they add exotic materials in the pad material. But, that raises the cost significantly. OEM F-sport pads are relatively low cost. Race brakes with this kind of performance and greater longevity (heat resistance) cost 2-3x as much. Brakes will always be a wear item, how fast is determined by use.

Sorry, how is this a joke? Mileage will vary from one driver to another. You could have pulled the wheel off and look at the pads in the caliper to save you the hassle of buying pads in the first place.
I can drive my IS "Like I stole it" and my pads could outlast yours. Who knows? Lexus could have changed the compound in the FSport pads to make them last longer or maybe the dealership or someone replace them with non-fsport pads during a campaign.
