Kind of a german-anger, japanese car guys get. "After 50k yeah! after 50k problem yeah!" I know i know. i've heard it plenty of times. Something they don't understand. I get it. My friend has a 2IS and has been stranded a couple times, most recently a mind boggling two week stay at the Lexus dealer diagnosing a no start problem. My other friend's 2IS 250 had its engine rebuilt by lexus prior to 50k. no car is immune. I remember his mom bought a brand new ES (around 2008) and the window fell out of its channel and was just dangling to one side. Stuff happens.
On the contrary, my BMWs have been among the more reliable cars i've owned. E30 247k trouble free. not a single break down. E46/60k trouble free, E46 160ishK, not a single failure. Two M3s, one with 205k the other with 130k, same thing. it's not uncommon to see 3 series and 5 series 6 cylinders with well over 200k.
Besides, for me, I tend to lease my cars. So it's a moot point whether or not I can make it past 50k. 30k and i'm onto the next car =)
There's stories and anecdotal evidence for every make on both sides of the coin. Yes japanese tend to be more reliable as a whole, but modern cars last long in general. Every car out there (Ford, Chevy, Kia, Toyota, Lexus, Ferrari etc) makes it to 100k without any hiccups.
Besides if BMW engineering would give you problems after 50k, why would Toyota choose to use the entire BMW powertrain in their new Supra? The new Supra is going to use the exact same powertrain in the new 3 Series. both 4 and 6 setups.
Toyota Chief Engineer was impressed with BMW engineering in his latest interview.

It's not a rumor. It's confirmed by Toyota's chief engineer and also internal documents have been leaked.
Here's one showing the world class B48B20 and B58B30

I love all the engineers of all companies that do a superb job. For example, Hyundai has some masterful engineering going on, crushing current Lexus models in most metrics.
Audi also has some crushers. I can say it about a lot of manufacturers. And I do. I've owned cars from various different brands, I don't stick to one country or one brand. I'm on my 17th car or so.

that engine is probably worth more than our cars and not very streetable. has a highly specific purpose. If i were to lust after an engine though, not sure it would be over a 4 banger, regardless of how raced out it is.

I just call it like it is. I'm an everything-fanboy. I don't just choose one group of people (Japanese) because I want to be angry at "the other side."

+1 on the E46 BMW. I drove mine for 14 years, and now my daughter is driving it! Great car.

I test drove my brother's 200t for a weekend, then a 350, choose a 350 because of the lag. But its not just lag, its the combination of turbo lag and an 8 speed transmission, which when you try to pass or hit the throttle, has to downshift from 8 to 5 or 4. That's a big jump. Then the turbo lag kicks in... The 350 thinks ever so slightly, then you are off with the lower end torque.
For all that is holy, an 03 IS300 unmolested, with low (for the years) mileage is a holy grail of tuner cars!
Maybe wait a year or two to see what Lexus does with the upcoming 4th gen.
