License Plate Screws
Has anyone had problems using screws with their rear license plate?
The dealer put plastic screws and threw away my old metal hex head ones that were on my NX..
I ordered stainless steel screws and they are the same thread but cannot get them to screw into my trunk. They start fine then stop..
I also notice that the black plastic screws are very difficult to thread in also. So maybe they have give to them because they are soft. Im thinking maybe something with the threads on my trunk. Just wondering if anyone has any input on this

And yeah they might be but my car is literally 1 month old.
I’m going to bring it into the dealer and have them look at it because this shouldn’t be cross threaded or stripped on a brand new car.
I have a tap tap and die kit at work but if I retap the holes I’m just worried about rust.
Like how do you prevent that on the cars?
I’m guessing to put some touch up paint in the threads but won’t that just scrape off as soon as you thread the screw in there ?

Actually, it’s very common. Stripped or cross threads. I rethread them when a client needs their plates installed.

I’ll mess with it tomorrow at work and report back funny thing is it’s both holes
im wondering if it’s because there’s paint in the threads from when they painted the car and it’s just really tight.

The screws that were put in the first time should have cleaned most of the paint off the threads.
If the new screws go in a few turns and just outright stop, then it's likely the wrong thread pitch.
If you're absolutely sure it's the right thread pitch, then run a tap through the hole, and then bolts should go in fine.
The paint on the threads will never stay, they're not supposed to.

i ordered on amazon stainless steel screws that were advertised for Toyota lexus and when matching the threads from the plastic ones the dealer put in and the ones I bought they interlock perfect. Like I said the plastic ones feel tight screwing in also but I think since their plastic they have give to them.

The hole likely just needs a tap run through it to clean up the threads and some new metal bolts installed.

Okay so today at work I removed both plastic screws and looked at the threads and it looked like there was some masking tape in there I guess from the two pieces that they leave on the trunk over the holes, So I took a dentist pick ( I use them at work ) and I cleaned out the threads and the M6 screw did in fact screw in with no problem.
Thanks for everyones input on this subject, Im glad it was just debris in the threads and not messed up threads.
