MAJOR ISSUE - IS350 Recall - Rear Arch Corrosion
#31
I totally hear you LexuScott. While this is clearly not Lexus's fault, they really need to own up. There is a clear distinction between a minor/cosmetic recall fix, and a major highly evasive one like in your case. For cars with extensive corrosion, major panel welding, and as you correctly put it "chopped up", etc. no matter how good the fix it, it will have a significant impact on the car's value, car experience, and will presumably show up in carfax or on inspection. For this reason alone, Lexus honestly should give you a fair price buy back option, and I would drive that argument all the way. Good luck and hoping you fair well.

Considering the fact that I seem to be in a somewhat unique situation (most people don't have rust) in my opinion Lexus should base their decision off my willingness to keep the car after finding out that all of this work needs to be done to the car. They should at a minimum offer to buy the car back, and they should also offer me some kind of deal to be put in a newer IS that doesn't have this issue. I think it's great that Lexus is admitting there is an issue, however, I don't feel like I should have to be driving a car that has been taken apart and put back together and painted due to a Lexus screw-up that was not my fault.
They will not buy the vehicle back from you for a minor issue that is FIXABLE.
Sit down.. Relax and let them fix the vehicle the proper way.
PS. Lexus Corporate also reads this Forum. Congrats on making yourself look like a fool and Good luck getting any further assistance from them.

Where do people get this idea from, of this showing up on car fax..there is no accident here...please quit with the "fake propaganda".. I also see absolutely no reason for Lexus to buy back a used car that has accumulated an extra 40k miles since purchased.....
PS. back in the day the BMW E46 had an issue where the rear sub frame would crack on cars and BMW waited years to acknowledge this which was a safety hazard at the time. Most owners had to fix out of pocket more than once, even guys with M3's..just imagine having a car where the sub-frame separate from the rear flooring....oh how glad we would have been if BMW had taken the initiative as Lexus has done here...

From all your responses, it sounds like you're privileged/spoiled just cause you drive a Lexus and because its a Lexus... you should be entitled to a brand new IS instead of given free repairs because the problem was caused by them, not you. Getting a new IS does NOT guarantee a recall will not happen in the future either. Lexus made a "mistake" if thats what you want to call it, owned up to it and is fixing it at no cost to any of us within the given time frame. Why can't you just accept it? I dont know why you mention resale value either. Are you not planning to keep the car for a long time? Isnt that why you chose to purchase the 6yr/125k mile warranty? A reliable car such as Lexus will hold its value and you can always explain/show the potential buyer why a part of your car was taken apart by the dealership.
2. I never said I should be "entitled" to a brand new IS. I meant that they could buy back my car at a fair price and work out a deal to put me in a new IS.
3. I typically keep my cars until they hit about 100-125k miles because that's typically the amount of time the warranties last and I don't want to drive a car that has no warranty. This is why I mention trade in value.
4. I have spoken to many auto body specialists and they all told me that ANY body work to this extent or greater will have an impact on the resale value of the car. To make things worse, the dealer's auto body shop has several HORRIBLE reviews online.
I'm not sure what kind of car you drive, but I am sure if you were in my situation you would feel the same way.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it's a Lexus or that I am "spoiled." If this was a $15,000 Toyota Corolla I would feel the same way.
That sucks for Audi owners, I guess now I know why I chose to drive a Lexus.
Replacing a quarter panel and painting a car is not a "MINOR issue." Having to spray a sealant to fix an issue is a "MINOR issue."
You're saying Lexus Corporate reads this forum as if that's an issue? Should I be scared? Please, let them read more about what they already know.

I wish I could. It's not visible when you are looking from outside the car. Apparently the service manager at the dealership took photos. I will ask him to send them to me. Or do you think it's worth me taking another trip to the body shop and asking them to show me?

The pursuit of F
LexuScott.
Your reaction is understandable. When I had my '17 A4 and regularly was on the audiworld forum, there was a major issue with the 7-speed transmission affecting some existing owners and new deliveries around the November-December 2016 timeframe. The new deliveries were held at port for weeks to inspect and replace a faulty transmission. Some owners expressed strong negative sentiments on how their car is not new anymore as it got taken apart with potentially a new tranny installed. My tranny in the A4 had some strange vibrations at certain speeds among other minor issues which lead me out of the car after 6 weeks of ownership. Needless to say, take comfort in the fact that Lexus is repairing under warranty a "cosmetic" issue instead of a mechanical one. Hope the work turns out to your satisfaction and enjoy your IS!

Carfax doesn't matter. When it comes to trading in a car this is why repairs matter.

So you're that difficult customer everyone hates. Sorry I know it's an inconvenience but you sound like a person that doesn't know how cars or life works. This is so not something to be upset about. Of course your car will be taken apart to replace a quarter panel. Cuts have to be made at the c-pillar and window removed and part of your interior has to be stripped. This is kindergarten stuff to do--just because it's mysterious to you doesn't mean it's not regular course of business and isn't a big deal. A 2-year old with enough experience can put a car back together, it's not a big deal. You have a loaner and Lexus is owning up to its mistake. What more do you want? This entire "issue" is a total nothing burger. Totally.

My issue is NOT what needs to be done to the car. My issue is WHY this needs to be done to my car. Sure this is the correct fix for this issue. Sure if I got into a car accident and my car needed body work / paint I would have to live with it because it would be my fault and I would understand that. But I feel that I should not have to live with a car that has to be torn apart and put back together and painted just because Lexus screwed up from the factory.
Not saying this in a rude way to you but would you be happy if Lexus sent you a letter and eventually told you your car had to be cut apart and put back together because of something they screwed up? THAT is my issue. I would have never bought the car had work like this been done to it in the first place.

I guarantee you that quote on quote rust they saw wouldn't have caused any issues even if you keep the car for 10 years. That particular dealership owns that body shop, I am sure the only reason they decided to over react like this is they are making ton of money for there body shop by charging Lexus back for all the work. The bad thing is your the one that becomes victim as it's your car that being torn apart and being painted all over. I completely understand your frustration and hope you bring all these facts to Lexus corp for buy back. Ask to see the pictures of the damage and I bet if you look into it more you will see that this place probably had more cars done like this because there probably using it as a money maker.
Don't sweat it man worse case they don't buy it back you just trade it and get new one that is all you can do,
As for the other idiots saying your complainer, lets see them have there car torn down and painted without notice and see how they would react.

I feel your pain and would probably be acting the exact same way. A car can be an emotional purchase, so when you see your dream vehicle in pieces, it does not feel good. I had a 2008 Acura TSX I bought new that got rear ended at 8 months and caused a decent amount of damage - seeing it in pieces while being repaired was troubling, to say the least. Yes, it gets put back to supposedly factory "new", but there is no such thing and it is never the same - there are always tell tale signs of repair work.. No one can say the value will not be affected - it will be - any paint/body work results in lost value. I got $5k lost value on that vehicle in the settlement - was not going to settle for just getting it fixed. I drove it for 7 years after that, but still was bothered by the repair. Luckily, the repairs were done mechanically well and we still have the car today - my son drives it.
So please everyone, cut some slack here. As someone who keeps there car a long time, it is more painful when things like this happen. If you trade every 2-3 years, it's easy to overlook since it will get traded in the near future.
