Another one of these threads. Input isn't needed because you shouldn't put anything less than 91.

Here's more input for your reading enjoyment.

I got this from the manual:

Select premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher required for optimum engine performance. If 91 octane cannot be obtained, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Number 91). Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 91 may result in engine knocking and significantly reduced performance. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage and should be corrected by refueling with higher octane unleaded gasoline.

Obviously, price is the ONLY deciding factor between higher fuel grades.
However, people would continue using lower octane and argue that "price is not a factor". Apparently it is.

Couldnt have said it better myself lol. Exactly what I was thinking.

You initial post said price isn't a concern. So if it isn't a concern, just put in 91 like you're supposed to. End of story. Shouldn't be concerned with 5 extra dollars in gas when driving a 40-50k Lexus anyways...

My step-mom has a Supercharged Range Rover and runs 87 all day in it. Guess what, it still hauls *** and purrs like a kitten! A little 2.0T doesn't need 91+. If you read the gas pump it says, "MINIMUM" Octane Rating! Theres a good chance that if you pump 87, you may very well be pumping 88/89. If you pump 91, there's a good chance you're pumping 92/93. Its your money but unless you plan on racing the car all day every day, putting 91+ in it, IN MY OPINION, is a waste.

A few years ago I had two cars. On the gas cap one said "Premium Fuel Required", the other said "Premium Fuel Recommended".

according to the manual it says 91 or higher. I personally don't mind spending 5 extra dollars or so for gas.

Yeah. In the end it all comes down to if you wanna treat your car right. Everyone has their own personal opinions about this topic and really, its still pretty controversial.

The octane rating of gasoline essentially tells you how much the air-fuel mixture can be compressed before it will spontaneously ignite. Generally speaking, the higher the engine's compression ratio, the higher the octane required to avoid spark-knock.

With me so far?

Now, considering that our IS 350's have a relatively high compression ratio of 11.5:1, it is this fact, and only this fact, why Lexus engineer's recommend premium octane gas. It is not for fun performance reasons. It is to maintain the normal performance of the engine over a longer period of time.

Using lower than specified octane gas will absolutely damage your engine over time. Period!

Want to verify for yourself? Google "Why different octanes are used" and also google "What causes spark-knock."

my TRD Toyota solara V6 gas cap says "unleaded fuel only" reason why I stay positive because it's a big different between the regular fuel and the premium fuel , I've learnt this 16 years ago. I put regular it drives fine but pulling sucks like 4cyl corrola. And then I had to replaced knock sensor after 2 years of running regular cost me 350$ oem sensor. Yes it's up to drivers though. Regular fuel sometimes makes the car jerking what I've experienced .

Yeah, that's what I don't understand about people who buy luxury cars and complain about using premium gas that is an extra few bucks.
OP has a IS350 F-sport, that's a $50K+ car.

As someone else mentioned, these questions come on models when they get 3-4 years old and the prices on them come down. Some people stretch their dollar to get the car and then skimp on maintenance and proper care.

I see this a lot with BMW owners. People get into a beautiful looking 6-7 year old 7 series ($90k car) and then can't afford to fix a suspension bushing or a piece of electronic that goes bad. Eventually, a few years later these things become pieces of garbage rolling down the road w/ issues galore.
